SUBJECT: Disciplinary Procedure SOP: 200.2.10<br />

PURPOSE: To establish the criteria and set guidelines for progressive disciplinary actions.<br />

NO CONTRACT CREATED: The City of College Station is an at - will employer. Be it known the<br />

employment relationship between the employee and the City of College Station can be terminated at any<br />

time, by either party. No wrongful discharge claims may be brought against the City of College Station.<br />

INTENT: Progressive discipline is intended to use counseling, and warnings, to modify or improve<br />

undesirable performance and behavior. The employee benefits from this policy through a fair and equitable<br />

disciplinary process.<br />

FORMAL DISCIPLINARY PROCESS:<br />

A. ORAL WARNINGS : Oral warnings will be used to correct poor performance or improper behavior. Oral<br />

warnings are conducted by the Station Officer with notification to Battalion Chief. (minor action)<br />

1. The Station Officer will investigate the following; who was involved, possible witnesses, circumstances<br />

surrounding the incident, when it happened, why it happened, and how the situation can be avoided in the<br />

future.<br />

2. The employee will be counseled concerning the problem or unacceptable behavior, given suggestions for<br />

improvement. Consequences of continued unacceptable behavior or job performance will be reviewed at<br />

this time.<br />

3. The Officer will complete the Record of Employee Performance Conference (oral and written warnings)<br />

form. This record shall be signed by both the employee and supervisor. Oral warnings will be kept in the<br />

assigned Battalion Chief’s file.<br />

B. WRITTEN WARNINGS : A written warning is the second step in a progressive disciplinary process.<br />

Written warnings are very serious, and are intended to cause the employee to modify unacceptable behavior<br />

or poor performance. Written warnings are to be carried out by the Station Officer with approval of the<br />

Battalion Chief. (minor action)<br />

1. The Station Officer will investigate the following; who was involved, witnesses involved,<br />

circumstances surrounding the incident, when it happened, and how the situation can be avoided in the<br />

future.<br />
