7.1 AVAILABILITY OF ACCOMMODATION FACILITY IN CLASSIFIED HOTELS<br />

As per the data from Ministry of <strong>Tourism</strong>, Government of India, the total number of classiffied hotels as<br />

on March 2007 is 266. The total number of rooms available is 7654. The category-wise number of classified<br />

hotels is given in Table 7.1.1. The detailed list of all classified hotels as on March 2007 is given as<br />

Annexure I.<br />

As per the India <strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Statistics</strong> 2006, Department of <strong>Tourism</strong> & Culture there are 258 classified hotels<br />

in the state, out of which 154 are three star hotels (60%). Considering the area-wise distribution of these<br />

three star hotels, it can be seen that 40% hotels are functioning in 5 corporations and the remaining are<br />

scattered elsewhere. Considering the depromotive policy region such as Kovalam, Kumarakom, Munnar,<br />

Thekkady and all city corporation areas as a whole, the number of three star hotels under this area is<br />

77%. In Malabar region the share of three star hotel is only 12%. In the light of the above statistics as well<br />

as the comprehensive plan to promote north <strong>Kerala</strong> - ‘Wake up to Malabar’, it is clear that more and<br />

more new initiatives in the field of hotel industry is to be promoted in Malabar region.<br />

7.2 HOTEL OCCUPANCY STATISTICS<br />

In the annual report of Continuous Tourist Survey for the year 2006-2007, it is stated that the<br />

accommodation for nearly 72% of the foreign tourists is in star hotels and resorts, while 23% of the<br />

tourists stayed at non classified hotels. But in the case of domestic tourists, almost 93% of tourists stayed<br />

at star or other type of hotels. The average occupancy rate of hotels through out the year is 40%. The<br />

accommodation status is detailed in Tables 7.2.1 and 7.2.2.<br />
