• Support for <strong>Kerala</strong> as a destination is highest in Karnataka, where not only the awareness levels<br />
about the destination are high; but also the tourists prefer <strong>Kerala</strong> as a destination, as compared<br />
to an international destination.<br />
• The awareness levels about <strong>Kerala</strong> as a destination, intention to visit the destination and the<br />
reasons cited for attraction in <strong>Kerala</strong> are much more positive amongst the international tourists.<br />
• We believe that the <strong>Kerala</strong> tourism needs to further reinforce promotions amongst the International<br />
segments to help inclusion of <strong>Kerala</strong> in their travel plans; even while they visit other Centers,<br />
particularly the Southern Centers from where travel into <strong>Kerala</strong> can be very easy; however this<br />
is not happening to a scale it should happen.<br />
• Large number of foreign tourists visiting Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh; do not<br />
include <strong>Kerala</strong> in their travel plans as yet.<br />
Suggestions offered for encouraging tour to <strong>Kerala</strong> are:<br />
· Travel is made cheaper to accommodate budget tourists;<br />
· Connectivity – rail and air enhanced; and<br />
· Better marketing and publicity about <strong>Kerala</strong> as a tourist destination.<br />

11.1.43. HOTELS, HANDICRAFT AND TOUR AND TRAVEL OPERATORS<br />
A. Hotels Survey<br />
To estimate the facilities available, Hotels – classified and unclassified, Restaurants, Handicraft and Tour<br />
and Travel Operators were surveyed in a predesigned questionnaire.The Survey covered 230<br />
accommodations units of various categories - stars, resorts, heritage hotels and others, spread out<br />
throughout the State. Non star hotels constituted about 36% followed by 3-Star (25%) and 2-Star hotels,<br />
ten 4-Star Hotels (4%), and eight 5-Star Hotels (4%).The specific objective of the study was to understand<br />
the dynamics of the hotel industry, handicraft industry and tour and travel operators in <strong>Kerala</strong>. The sub<br />
objectives specifically are to:<br />
• Assess the distributional pattern of hotels<br />
• Determine the relative size<br />
• Analyze the growth pattern<br />
• Determine the ownership structure<br />
• Assess availability of rentable rooms<br />
• List various facilities available in hotels<br />
• Find out the tariff ranges<br />
• Income generated<br />
• Tax paid to government<br />
• Review details of financial facilities<br />
• Assess the nature of human resources employed and<br />
