• Nearly 34-52% of the tourists stayed in lodges while 23% stayed at unclassified hotels. Only 8-13%<br />
of the visitors stayed at star hotels.<br />
• For 56-63% of the Keralite tourists, average daily expenditure is less than Rs.500. Nearly 13-24%<br />
of them spent more than Rs.1000. The average daily expenditure for 2004-05 was Rs.708 and the<br />
corresponding figures for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 tourists were Rs.528 and Rs.640 respectively.<br />
• The highest expenditure is on journey followed by food and for all other items the expenditure<br />
is very low.<br />
• About 63% tourists came here for ‘Leisure’ followed by ‘Pilgrimage’. ‘Visiting friends and relatives’<br />
and ‘business’ are other important reasons to come to this place.<br />
• Nature’s beauty attracted more than 50% of the tourists. Privacy of the tourist places fascinated<br />
some of them (19-26%) to repeat their tour. ‘Facilities in the tourist destinations’ is another<br />
major reason of revisit.<br />
Hotel<br />
• Amongst the 230 hotels surveyed, 44% started functioning during the last 10 years. 54% of them<br />
are private limited companies and 38% are single owned.<br />
• Nearly 65% of the hotels have restaurant in the hotel itself. Conference hall, room service, TV,<br />
hot-cold water, refrigerator, telephone, transport, laundry etc are facilities available in most of<br />
the hotels. Cultural show is available in 37% of the hotels and in 38% of the hotels bar facility is<br />
available.<br />
• Three star hotels employ highest number of persons followed by non-star and two star hotels.<br />
The average number of personnel in the present survey of hotel industry is 35. During the survey,<br />
we inferred from a large number of hotels, acute shortage of trained and quality manpower. The<br />
burgeoning BPO and IT Industry, has made this shortage all the more acute since both industries<br />
employ similar profiles of people. In <strong>Kerala</strong> market, recruiting front office staff, fluent in English<br />
is increasingly becoming very difficult. Moreover, the labour cost in the Hotel Industry tends to<br />
be very high, due to high involvement of the Trade Unions.<br />
• Nearly 36% of the hotels earn Rs.5 lakh or more per month and 56% of the hotels have an income<br />
of more than Rs.1 lakh monthly. The average monthly income of the sample hotels is Rs.8,38,730.<br />
Increasing electricity tariffs were considered as one of the major deterrent for the sustenance of<br />
the Hotels.<br />
• <strong>Kerala</strong> cuisine is available in all hotels. Other south and north Indian and continental food are<br />
available in a large number of star hotels and heritage homes.<br />
Carrying Capacity of Kovalam<br />
• Kovalam is a prime destination consisting of four crescent shaped beaches.<br />
• In 1986, 88% of the foreign tourists visiting <strong>Kerala</strong> came to Kovalam. However, there is a declining<br />
trend in foreign tourists visits to Kovalam, though the tourists in real number is increasing.<br />
• The percentage of foreign tourists increased from 13% in 2004 to 16% in 2005.<br />
