Tourist’s trends<br />
• <strong>Kerala</strong> recorded 6.5 million domestic and foreign tourists arrival in the year 2006. The average<br />
annual growth in domestic tourists is more than 18 % over the past decade;<br />
• In 2006, the International tourists recorded a growth of 23.68%. The flow of domestic tourists<br />
increased by 5.47% during the same year;<br />
• Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, Ernakulam and Kozhikode attracted more than 71% of the tourists.<br />
• International tourist’s Country of Origin data shows that England contributed between 27 and<br />
32% followed by USA, France and Germany. In all the three years more than 58% of the foreign<br />
tourists were from England, USA, France and Germany.<br />
Tourist’s Profile<br />
A. International<br />
• 83% - 96% of the international tourists were in the age group of 22 to 55 years. Only a very small<br />
percentage (3%) of tourists was upto the age of 21 or above 55 years of age 5.7%.<br />
• International tourists visiting <strong>Kerala</strong> are well educated as about 73 to 93% were above graduates<br />
and above. On an averages for the three years, graduates and postgraduates accounted for<br />
about 85%.<br />
• About 38% of the tourists visiting <strong>Kerala</strong> were professionals followed by businessman (19.4%) and<br />
students (11%).<br />
• Use of website has increased from 30% in 2004-05 to 41.6% in 2005-06 and to 56% in 2006-07. The<br />
average for the 3 years was 43.7%. The tour agents also play a very important role in imparting<br />
information to the foreign tourists.<br />
• Air travel was used by 81% of the tourists in 2006-07. It has increased from 56% in 2004-05 and<br />
66% in the year 2005-06.<br />
• About 20-27% of the tourists who arrived through air came to Mumbai and 9-17% to Chennai.<br />
About 39% of the second year tourists arrived directly to <strong>Kerala</strong>.<br />
• Around 32% of the tourists of 2004-05 visited Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, but during 2005-06<br />
and 2006-07 38% and 39% of the tourists began their tour at Kochi, while 34% of the tourists<br />
visited Thiruvananthapuram.<br />
• For about 63% of the foreign tourists this is their first trip. About 20 % have visited two times and<br />
only about 18% visited more than three times.<br />
• About 74% of the foreign tourists were attracted by the natural beauty followed by beaches &<br />
backwaters (15%). Ayurveda and Yoga is another great attraction of <strong>Kerala</strong>.<br />
• More than 86 % of the visits were for leisure and remaining 14% for visiting friends, official trips,<br />
and business purposes.<br />
