created <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the participants’ communities. (They can decide which one).<br />
Ask participants to identify five helpful institutions in the community as potential assets and mark them<br />
on the community map. Ask participants to report back to the group briefly.<br />
Ask participants why they think institutions can be assets. They may respond with answers like:<br />
• “They can provide services and expertise.”<br />
• “They can <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>of</strong>fice space and facilities for community activities.”<br />
• “They can lend materials and equipment for community activities.”<br />
• “They can purchase things made by community members (for example, chairs from a local<br />
carpenter, prepared food from a local women’s group)”<br />
• “They can <strong>of</strong>fer links to institutions outside the community.”<br />
Discuss with the participants what their experience is <strong>of</strong> institutions. Are they helpful in the community?<br />
Do they respond to requests? Who do they respond to?<br />
