VII. ALTERNATIVESstorage under this alternative is 52,300 acre-feet. Potential activities under Alternative D for theland and water areas both north and south of I-680 are identified in Table VII-3. Mining wouldbe completed by about 2036.1.5 MINING ALTERNATIVE EAlternative E includes mining north and south of I-680. Mining north of I-680 reflects the termsof SMP-32, as approved and permitted by Alameda County. Mining south of I-680 would be inaccordance with existing permits and leases. San Antonio Creek would not be mined underAlternative E. This alternative includes five water storage pits, one north and four south of I-680.Total water storage under this alternative is 53,100 acre-feet. Potential activities underAlternative E for the land and water areas both north and south of I-680 are identified inTable VII-3. Mining would be completed by about 2038.1.6 MINING ALTERNATIVE FAlternative F was developed in response to Alternative E and to address the cultural resources atthe Sunol Water Temple. Alternative F provides for mining both north and south of I-680. Allactivities related to non-water storage would be developed and operated by a concessionaire at nocost to the rate payer.North of I-680 this alternative accommodates SMP-32, with the exception of a quarter-mileresource-protection setback from the Sunol Water Temple. This setback is intended to provide anincreased buffer between the Sunol Water Temple and the mining activity and would also serveas mitigation for visual and cultural resource impacts. This buffer would consist of a mined areaaround the temple that would be backfilled and landscaped after completion. Mining andreclamation would be expedited in this area.South of I-680 water storage would be maximized. Expansion of this mining activity is notcovered under existing SMP conditions and would require environmental review. San AntonioCreek would not be mined under Alternative F. The alternative includes six water storage pits, one north and five south of I-680. Total water storage under this alternative is 63,200 acre-feet.Potential activities under Alternative F for the land and water areas both north and south of I-680are identified in Table VII-3. Mining would be completed by about 2047.2.0 IMPACTSThe environmental effects of mining Alternatives A through F and Alternative S vary based onthe extent and types of use provided for under the alternatives. As discussed above,Alternatives A through F and Alternative S would include mining to various extents as well as arange of water storage, recreational, and educational uses following reclamation of mining pits.Major differences between the alternatives are highlighted below:! Alternatives A and C would provide the greatest variety of recreational activities.NOP 96.223E: Alameda Watershed Management Plan VII-23 ESA / 930385January 2001
