Born in <strong>Burlington</strong>, 2-9-1903 he lived there most <strong>of</strong> his life andjoined the fire department in 1947, attending the first organizational meeting. He signed as acharter member in 1948 when the department <strong>of</strong>ficially began operating. According to ChiefRichard Kellert, Tharau's life centered around the fire department. "Throughout his life, hefought 99 per cent <strong>of</strong> all reported fires, only missing a fire if he were out <strong>of</strong> town". He is survivedby his wife, Mary (Schwarzmann); a son, Erick B. Jr. <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burlington</strong>; two daughters, Mrs. Mary E.122
