As a boy scout he obtained the rank <strong>of</strong> Eagle Scout, and was an avidsailor and a long time member <strong>of</strong> the Middletown Power Squadron and had sailed from NovaScotia to Florida. Born in Milton 12-12-1887, he was the son <strong>of</strong> LuciusB. and Anna Clark Peck. He served in the army in WW 1. He is survived by his wife HattieSteward Peck <strong>of</strong> Harwinton, a brother, Henry L. and a sister, Mrs. Clara A.Shirlock, both <strong>of</strong>Torrington. Burial in Goshen Cemetery, Goshen, CT.PECK, DON EVARISTO, was born in Whigville seventy-two years ago on 4-25-1823. In1846 he was married to Miss Mary Yale, while residing in Bristol. He returned to Whigville andfor nearly forty years was engaged in the manufacture <strong>of</strong> sleds and carriages, and in generalwood turning business. Several years ago he retired from manufacturing and devoted himselfto his fine farm, always having had a liking for agriculture. He made his farm one <strong>of</strong> the best formarket gardening in this vicinity. Mr. Peck's business life extended over a wonderful period inAmerican history, the era <strong>of</strong> the rapid and marvelous extension <strong>of</strong> manufacturing and industrialenterprises. He took a deep interest in this progress and kept well informed in matters90
pertaining to it, as well as in affairs generally. But he did not permit his business to claim all hisenergy, for he always took a keen, active and intelligent part in local affairs, being recognizedas a very public spirited man who believed in and worked for progress in education and otherdepartments <strong>of</strong> human endeavor. He gave his aid and encouragement to the building <strong>of</strong> theWhigville schoolhouse, which is much better than the average in outlying districts, and alwaysevinced a strong desire for the welfare <strong>of</strong> the school. For a long term he was a deacon in theCongregational church <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burlington</strong>, and later become a member <strong>of</strong> the Bristol church.He always had a fondness for politics, being first a Whig and then a Republican. He heldquite a number <strong>of</strong> local <strong>of</strong>fices, all <strong>of</strong> which he filled in a most satisfactory manner, but he caredmore for the best interests <strong>of</strong> his party than for personal success and honors. The Grange, als<strong>of</strong>ound in him a loyal and enthusiastic member.It is the testimony <strong>of</strong> all who knew him that he was a man <strong>of</strong> high character, good judgmentand sterling integrity, an active, earnest citizen, and a loyal friend. His family relations wereespecially pleasant and lovable. He leaves to mourn for him a wife who is in feeble health, twosons, Mr. B. A.
