VALENTINE, PLESENT F. 67, who was very well known in Collinsville and New Hartford,died Tuesday afternoon at his home in Nepaug <strong>of</strong> cancer 1-5-1915. Mr. Valentine was born inRichmond, VA on 12-22-1848, and at the age <strong>of</strong> 14, being a large boy <strong>of</strong> his age, he was ableto join the Confederate army, having run away from home to do so. He served as a regularsoldier for about a year and a half, and was in a number <strong>of</strong> battles, but always escaped injury.He deserted to the Union Army but was not regularly enrolled as he was too young but did serveas a cook for the 20th Connecticut Regiment, until the close <strong>of</strong> the war and was mustered outwith his regiment in Hartford and received an honorable discharge. After some time spent inHartford he became a farm hand and was successively employed by Charles Adams inBloomfield, one year, Milo Holcomb, <strong>Burlington</strong>, one year, & then by members <strong>of</strong> the Adamsfamily in Bloomfield and the Holcomb family in <strong>Burlington</strong>, a number <strong>of</strong> years passed in thismanner. He was married 8-5-1874 to Mrs. Agatha Arnold <strong>of</strong> New Hartford, (5-11-1849 3-?-1908) and they bought the Spencer farm in Nepaug and lived on it for 18 years. Later he boughtthe Clark farm in Nepaug, about half a mile from the Spencer farm and here he lived for 22years, until last fall, when he went back to his former home, to live with his daughter Mrs.Conrad Vienot. Mrs. Valentine died about 7 years ago. He is survived by 5 children, Wallace,whose whereabouts are not known, Mrs. Edward Katzung <strong>of</strong> Collinsville, Mrs. Conrad Vienot &Francis P. Valentine <strong>of</strong> Nepaug, & Mrs. Arthur Williams <strong>of</strong> Sheffield. There are also two stepchildren, Mrs. Mary Scheidel & Julius G.Horn <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burlington</strong>. The number <strong>of</strong> grandchildren are14. He is also survived by 5 brothers, or was the last that he heard from them, Samuel, Tilman,Obe, Lee & Wallie Valentine, all <strong>of</strong> Richmond VA & one sister Clara also <strong>of</strong> Richmond. Hisbusiness <strong>of</strong> late years had been getting out lumber and burning charcoal. It is safe to concludethat not another case <strong>of</strong> a man who enlisted in the Confederate army and was honorablydischarged from the Union army can be found in Connecticut today. She was born inNYC, 12-29-1871, a daughter <strong>of</strong> the late Philip and Rosina Schneider Braum. She leaves adaughter, two grandchildren and a brother, all <strong>of</strong> New York. Burial in Center Cemetery,<strong>Burlington</strong>, CT.VAN DALINDA, JOSEPH, 82 <strong>of</strong> Punch Brook Road died 4-3-1954 after a long illness. He wasborn in Rochelle Park, NJ 4-21-1873 and had lived in <strong>Burlington</strong> for several years. He leaves hiswife, Katherine and a sister, Mrs. Sarah Smith both <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burlington</strong>; a niece Mrs. Earl Fuller <strong>of</strong><strong>Burlington</strong>. A nephew, Robert Smith <strong>of</strong> Kennetts Square, PA. A daughter <strong>of</strong> the late Deuel and Anna Henderson Holcomb, she was born in<strong>Burlington</strong> and lived for 25 years in Avon. She leaves two sons, Gordon E. <strong>of</strong> Collinsville andFiske H. <strong>of</strong> Avon; two sisters in St. Petersburg, FL; and two grandchildren. Besides his wife, he's survived by his daughter & son in law, Jennifer Ventres &Andrew Filler <strong>of</strong> West Hartford; his stepchildren, Richard Lawton <strong>of</strong> Brooklyn, Donna Myers <strong>of</strong>San Juan Capistrano, CA, Wendy Rounseville <strong>of</strong> Glastonbury; 9 grandchildren; a great grandchild. He was predeceased by his stepson, Robert Lawton, formerly <strong>of</strong> Tolland.VENTRES, GERTRUDE (Wuori) <strong>of</strong> Avon, passed away on Sunday (September 23, 2001).She was the widow <strong>of</strong> Gordon E. Ventres. She was born in Fitchburg, MA on September 5,1914, the daughter <strong>of</strong> the late Peter and Selma (Wuorinen) Wuori. She resided in <strong>Burlington</strong>during her youth, and later, with her husband and children, moved to Collinsville and Avon. Sheworked at CIGNA, prior to her retirement. She was a 59-year member <strong>of</strong> the Order <strong>of</strong> EasternStar Hesper Chapter #71 in Simsbury, serving as past Grand Matron, and belonged to the<strong>Burlington</strong> and Avon Senior Citizen centers. She was a member <strong>of</strong> the first Congregational130
Church <strong>of</strong> Collinsville, and <strong>of</strong>ten played the piano for several organizations. She is survived by ason and daughter-in-Iaw, Jonathan and Linda Ventres <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burlington</strong>; a daughter, Judith Ventres<strong>of</strong> Avon;10 grandchildren, Kimberly Sadowsky and her husband, Scott <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burlington</strong> and DavidVentres and his wife, Ann Marie <strong>of</strong> Avon; four great-grandchildren, Jayson, Kristin, Zachary, andJonathan Patrick; a niece, Jennifer Filler <strong>of</strong> Bloomfield, and two nephews, Guy Peter Wuori <strong>of</strong>Maine and Charles Wuori and his wife, Susan <strong>of</strong> Virginia.
