BARNES I. STANLEY, 44, died 7-31-1913 in the home where he was born (1869) near<strong>Burlington</strong> Station after a long illness, his lungs and throat affected. Mr. Barnes was engaged inthe wood and lumber business much <strong>of</strong> his life, in a number <strong>of</strong> places. He continued to handlehundreds <strong>of</strong> cords <strong>of</strong> wood and some thousands <strong>of</strong> railroad ties each season, in addition torunning the large farm. He was the son <strong>of</strong> Isaac Barnes who died 4 years ago, his mothersurvives him. About five years ago he married Jennie Erickson <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burlington</strong> who survives himand two sons; Everett Dewey and Isaac Clifford ages 5 & 7. The surviving brothers are Clifford<strong>of</strong> Bristol, Luther <strong>of</strong> New Britain, Amzi who lives in OH and Charles <strong>of</strong> New Britain; one sisterMrs. Frank Banning <strong>of</strong> Bristol. Mr. Barnes was born in <strong>Burlington</strong> 1-18-1865, a son <strong>of</strong> Josiah and Elizabeth(Kaiser)Barnes and spent his entire life in <strong>Burlington</strong> engaged in farming. He is survived by his wife,Annia Mason Barnes; two sons, Ellsworth and Ernest; one daughter Miss Mabel Barnes, asenior in the Thomaston High School; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Barnes; a brother, Everett A. <strong>of</strong>this city. and a half brother, Charles Judd <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burlington</strong>. Shewas born in Harwinton 2-18-1891 and lived in <strong>Burlington</strong> 58 years. She was a 4-H leader formany years, taught school in the Harwinton-<strong>Burlington</strong> area from 1907 to 1914. From 1942 to1952 she and her husband operated an American Youth Hostel in their home. She also wasknown for her braided rugs, her paintings and antique stenciling. Besides her husband, sheleaves a daughter, Mrs. Henry (Anna)Kirch<strong>of</strong>er; a sister, Mrs. Sara Herold <strong>of</strong> Terryville; and 3grandchildren. Burial in Center Cemetery, <strong>Burlington</strong>, CT.BARNES LOUIS UPSON, 90, <strong>of</strong> Barnes Hill road, a breeder <strong>of</strong> Brown Swiss cattle and aformer selectman, died 1-18-1979. Born in a house on Barnes Hill Road on 3-14-1888, he was alifelong resident there. He operated Barnes Hill stock farm on Barnes Hill Road for many years,retiring in 1970. At its peak, the farm had 40 to 50 head <strong>of</strong> Brown Swiss cattle. Mr. Barnes was atown selectman during the 1920's and was <strong>Burlington</strong>'s head fire warden from the 1920's toabout 1960. He was the husband <strong>of</strong> the late Laura (Raynor) Barnes. He leaves a daughter Mrs.Henry (Anna) Kirch<strong>of</strong>er <strong>of</strong> Harwinton; two sisters, Mrs. Susan Blakeslee <strong>of</strong> Plymouth and Mrs.Mildred Alderman <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burlington</strong>; three grandchildren. He later formed his own company, which built apartmentson Jubilee and East Streets, the former Arch Street Theater and Holy Trinity Greek CatholicChurch on Beaver street. In the 1920's he began buying 3,500 acres <strong>of</strong> land in the <strong>Burlington</strong>-Farmington area and created Lake Garda, which he named after his boyhood home. Thedevelopment around it eventually housed more than 500 homes. A later project was the creation<strong>of</strong> Lake Como in <strong>Burlington</strong>. Recently, he had continued to make plans for about 400 acreswhich remain <strong>of</strong> the original tract. He hoped to build a health clinic there. He also ownedproperty in FL.
