Husband <strong>of</strong> Joan (Humphrey) Tharau passedaway peacefully surrounded by his family and friends after a courageous battle with cancer onSaturday, (March 4, 2006) at his home. Born in <strong>Burlington</strong>, December 14, 1942, son <strong>of</strong> the lateErick B. and Mary (Schwarzmann) Tharau, Erick was a graduate <strong>of</strong> Farmington High School,Class <strong>of</strong> 1960. Junie was employed by The <strong>Town</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burlington</strong>, retiring as Assistant HighwayForeman. Junie served as Chief <strong>of</strong> The <strong>Burlington</strong> Volunteer Fire Department from 1982 to 1992and was an active dedicated member since 1959. The <strong>Town</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burlington</strong> and The VolunteerFire Department were his life and he worked hard as a town employee and volunteer fireman.His proud accomplishments were the new Fire Department Headquarters in 1987 and the newHighway Garage in 2000. In April 1993 he was recognized for his volunteerism by The HartfordCourant. He was a communicant at The Church <strong>of</strong> St. Patrick, Collinsville. Junie was an avidNASCAR and Boston Red Sox fan. He was a member <strong>of</strong> many fire service organizations. He issurvived by his beloved wife <strong>of</strong> 43 years, Joan; his three sons, Scott E. Tharau, Timothy J.Tharau and his wife, Bonnie, Christopher S. Tharau and his wife, Donna all <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burlington</strong>; hisbeloved grand-children who were the delight <strong>of</strong> his life, Melissa, Cassandra, Brennen, Justin-Michael, Victoria, Amber, Haley and Christina; his sister, Mary Barnes <strong>of</strong> Canton; Lisa Gilbert,mother <strong>of</strong> Melissa and Cassandra; his brother and sister-in-Iaw, Jack and Sue Quartiero; andbrother-in-law, Glenn Humphrey. He was predeceased by his sister, Hazel Ransom. Junieappreciated all his family and friends calls and visits over the last few months especially therespect afforded him by his fellow firemen. Born 11-11-1911, in <strong>Burlington</strong>, daughter <strong>of</strong> the late William E. and Mary Ellen(Murphy) Schwarzmann, and had lived in <strong>Burlington</strong> for all <strong>of</strong> her life. She is survived by twodaughters and sons-in-law, Mary E. "Mamie" and Don Barnes <strong>of</strong> Canton Center, anf Hazel M.and Burt Ransom <strong>of</strong> Belton, SC; a son and daughter-in-law, Erick B. "Junie" and Joan Tharau <strong>of</strong><strong>Burlington</strong>; a brother, Ernest (Ernie) <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burlington</strong>; two sisters Helen Tharau <strong>of</strong> Canton, andGrace Murelli <strong>of</strong> Port St.Lucie, FL; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was bornin Brandon VT (6-3-1932) & lived in Terryville for 21 years before moving to <strong>Burlington</strong> in 1965.A U.S.Army Veteran <strong>of</strong> the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Marie (Butler) Thompson <strong>of</strong><strong>Burlington</strong>; a son, Daniel, & two daughters, Miss Christine & Miss Lynn Thompson, all at home;and two sisters, Mrs. Carol Poulin & Mrs. Kathleen Verrastro, both <strong>of</strong> Wolcott.
