She was predeceased by a son, Howard Mason,and a brother, Lloyd Witham. The funeral will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m. at the TerryvilleCongregational Church, Terryville. Mr. Matthews wasa "49er" who went to California with a company which included Isaac Pierce, Jared Goodrich,Richard Norton and one or two others. All returned a few years later and reported havingmade some money. Some <strong>of</strong> them invested in what is now the Plainville Stockinet Factory,which was a pr<strong>of</strong>itable concern for many years. He was born here 9-1-1870, ason <strong>of</strong> Charles H. and Frances M.(Lamberton) Matthews. A farmer by trade, he was a directdescendent <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the earliest settlers <strong>of</strong> New Cambridge, and the home in which he wasborn stands beside the house in which he had lived. Its location near the Bristol-<strong>Burlington</strong> linemade it possible for Mr. Matthews to be active in civic and social affairs in both communities.He was a superintendent for many years <strong>of</strong> the Union Sunday School <strong>of</strong> Whigville. In 3-1898,he married Henrietta Moses <strong>of</strong> Unionville who died 9-11-1920. On 10-22-1922 he was marriedto Miss Ella Winston. He leaves his wife; two sons, Charles A. <strong>of</strong> Hyattsville, MD and Adrian M.<strong>of</strong> <strong>Burlington</strong>. Burial in West Cemetery, Bristol, CT.MATTHEWS, ELLA MAE(Winston) 78, 0f 1330 <strong>Burlington</strong> Ave. widow <strong>of</strong> Edwin A. died ---.She was born in Atlanta, IA, 8-23-1876, a daughter <strong>of</strong> Frank and Alice(Muzzy)Winston andcame to this city in April <strong>of</strong> 1902. She was a descendant <strong>of</strong> old Bristol families. As a girl Mrs.Matthews pioneered with her parents in the settlements <strong>of</strong> Filley, NB and at Beatrice, NB. Shealso attended an academy in NB. Mrs. Matthews was a former teacher at North Chippens HillSchool, Edgewood School and Peaceable Street School, now the <strong>Burlington</strong> AvenueCommunity Club. She was married 10-7-1922 to Edwin Matthews, who died last March. Sheleaves two stepsons, Adrian M.Matthews <strong>of</strong> Bristol and Charles A. <strong>of</strong> Hyattsville, MD. Burial inWest Cemetery Bristol, CT.MATTHEWS HENRIETTA AUGUSTA(Moses), wife <strong>of</strong> Edwin A. died at her home on<strong>Burlington</strong> Avenue on Saturday evening after a short illness <strong>of</strong> typhoid pneumonia(1920), Mrs.Matthews was born in <strong>Burlington</strong> 56 years ago in1864, and was a graduate <strong>of</strong> the UnionvilleHigh and New Britain Normal schools. She taught in several districts <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burlington</strong> verysuccessfully. In 1889 she was married to Edwin A. Matthews and became a loving wife andmother. She was a loyal member <strong>of</strong> Whigville Grange, filling many <strong>of</strong>ficers chairs and helped ineveryway possible. In the Whigville Sunday School she was a willing and efficient memberteacherand organist. She was also a faithful member <strong>of</strong> the Bristol Congregational Church. Shewas <strong>of</strong> a very sunny disposition and her place will be very difficult one to fill because <strong>of</strong> hermany charming qualities. Besides her husband two sons, Charles Arthur and Adrian Moses,also a brother Arthur Moses are left to mourn loss. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 o’clockat her late residence. Rev. E.L. Wiser <strong>of</strong> Bristol will <strong>of</strong>ficiate. Burial will be in West Cemetery,Bristol, CT.McCALLUM, CHARLES HENRY, infant son <strong>of</strong> Douglas and Carolyn (Bemis) McCallum <strong>of</strong><strong>Burlington</strong> Road, died 2-9-1962. Besides his parents, he leaves his paternal grandparents, Mr.and Mrs. Henry H.McCallum <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burlington</strong>; and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. ArnoldBemis <strong>of</strong> Foster, RI. Burial in Center Cemetery, <strong>Burlington</strong>, CT.McCALLUM, DOUGLAS WILLIAM, 76, <strong>of</strong> <strong>Burlington</strong>, beloved husband <strong>of</strong> Carolyn (Bemis)McCallum, passed way peacefully, Tuesday, (July 11, 2006). Born in Springfield, MA, August13, 1929, son <strong>of</strong> the late Henry Hardy and Edith (Vanderpoel) McCallum, he resided in<strong>Burlington</strong> since 1938. Douglas was a graduate <strong>of</strong> Farmington High School, Class <strong>of</strong> 1947,79
