(Fig. 9)Being unruly and aggressively partisan without being connectedto any political party, or seen in cahoots with the industry,are the criteria on which British quality dailies’ credibilityare rated by their readers.<strong>The</strong> high ratings for credibility as an important element <strong>of</strong>the editorial line expressed by the participating journalists are,therefore, nothing but the confirmation <strong>of</strong> the priorities set forearlier questions. (Fig. 10)Consistent with their history <strong>of</strong> not having any politicalaffiliation, British print media don’t feel the particularly continentalEuropean missionary urge. <strong>The</strong>y certainly do considercivil society. But according to British journalistic understanding,the role <strong>of</strong> the press is to report on facts and events and notto service or educate anybody. Hence the rather lukewarmenthusiasm when asked about service to civil society as part <strong>of</strong>the editorial line. (Fig. 12) British journalistswill watch over democracy. <strong>The</strong>y will defend the systemwhich guarantees their rights <strong>of</strong> freedom and independence.<strong>The</strong>y will report on shortcomings and abuses. But they will, inalmost any case, refrain from counselling in the way the continentalEuropean print media would do.It is, however, interesting to observe how the British journalists’rather detached description <strong>of</strong> the state <strong>of</strong> their newspaperdiffers from the opinion <strong>of</strong> their own pr<strong>of</strong>essional situation.<strong>The</strong>re is no substitute for the, once so powerful, workscouncils at British newspapers. Without the possibility <strong>of</strong> gettingproper organized support from the inside <strong>of</strong> their paper,many British journalists today have to fend for their rights individually.This is particularly difficult in times <strong>of</strong> dealing withglobally operating media conglomerates. This most extremeform <strong>of</strong> media concentration surely has positive effects for theowners.
