Based on results of their extraction study, Duplessisand Guillaumont [77DUP/GUI] also reported a value (log 10 K (8.5) =−1.5) for theequilibrium constant for this reaction. For reasons discussed in Appendix A, neitherthis value nor that of Schmidt et al. [80SCH/GOR] is accepted in the present review.In acidic solutions, there is certainly evidence of species more extensively hydrolysedthan NpOH 3+ , but the structure and charge of these species have not been establishedThere is no experimental evidence that Np(OH) + 3is formed in the Np(IV)/water system, and this species is not credited in the present review. Rai and Ryan[85RAI/RYA] reported a limiting, pH-independent solubility of ≤ 10 −8.3 Mfor“neptunium(IV) hydrous oxide” in neutral to very basic solutions at room temperaturein the presence of reducing agents. Ewart et al. [85EWA/GOR] reported a limitingneptunium concentration of 10 −8.1 M over “Np(OH) 4 ” under similar conditions, butover a more limited pH range. The use of 235 Np in carrier 237 Np by this group allowedconsiderably lower concentrations of neptunium to be detected than was possible inthe work of Rai and Ryan. Also, Pratopo, Moriyama and Higashi [89PRA/MOR]reported pH-independent equilibrium neptunium concentrations of 10 −8.5 M Np(IV)in aqueous Na 2 SO 4 solutions for pH values between 8.5 and 12.5. The two studies thatclaimed not to be limited by their analytical methods suggest values that differ by onlya factor of 2.5. In the present review we accept a value of 10 −(8.3±0.3) M, where theuncertainties have been increased slightly to allow for possible difficulties with samplehandling and analytical methods. The selected value is also in good agreement witha value of −(8.28 ± 0.23) reported by Eriksen et al. [93ERI/NDA] from solubilitiesmeasured in 0.5 M NaClO 4 (aq) over NpO 2·xH 2 O prepared by electroreduction ofNp(V) on a platinum electrode.After most of this review was complete, Nakayama, Yamaguchi and Sekine[96NAK/YAM] published a paper that reported a gradual decrease in the solubilityof Np(OH) 4 in 0.1 M and 1 M NaClO 4 (from 10 −(7.5±0.3) to ≤ 10 −9 Minsomecases) for equilibration periods between 28 and 119 days, and some variation in themeasured solubilities depending on the holding reductant. These results suggest thevalue selected in the present review might require revision at a future date.The pH independence of the solubility suggests that the main solutionspecies is uncharged, i.e., Np(OH) 4 (aq) (or a polymer thereof). Thus, if theGibbs energy of formation of the solid is known, a value can be calculated for f G ◦ m (Np(OH) 4, aq, 298.15 K).In a paper by Rai et al. [87RAI/SWA] a value of log10 ∗Ks,0 = 1.5 forNpO 2·xH 2 O(am) was reported, based on the concentration of Np 4+ overNpO 2·xH 2 O(am) in the presence of Cu(I)/Cu(II) as a redox buffer. In thesame paper a value of log10 ∗Ks,0 = 2.7 was reported, based on the equilibriumconcentration of NpO + 2over NpO 2·xH 2 O(am) in the same solutions (higher equilibriumNp(V) concentrations were reported by Moriyama, Pratopo and Higashi[89MOR/PRA] from a similar, but less-well defined experiment at higher ionicstrength with Na 2 SO 4 as holding reductant).NpO 2·xH 2 O Å NpO + 2 + e− + xH 2 O (8.6)
