African American StudiesCourses in African American studies (designated AASP) may beapplied as appropriate (according to individual program requirements)toward• a minor in African American studies; and• electives.A description <strong>of</strong> the curriculum for the African American studiesminor begins on p. 34.AASP 201 Introduction to African AmericanStudies (3)(Fulfills the historical perspective or civic responsibility requirement.)An interdisciplinary study <strong>of</strong> significant aspects <strong>of</strong> AfricanAmerican history and culture, emphasizing the development <strong>of</strong>African American communities from the Middle Passage to thepresent. Topics include definitions <strong>of</strong> African American identity,influences and achievements within American culture, and issuesconfronting African Americans. May be repeated to a maximum<strong>of</strong> 6 credits when topics differ.ANTH 343 Physical Anthropology andArchaeology (3)(Formerly ANTH 340. Fulfills the international perspectiverequirement.) An interdisciplinary, intermediate-level exploration<strong>of</strong> contemporary and applied issues in physical anthropology andarchaeology. Discussion covers evolution, human biological variation,primate studies, as well as archaeological frameworks andchallenges. Focus is on theory and its application in dealing withconcerns in our global society. Students may receive credit foronly one <strong>of</strong> the following courses: ANTH 340, ANTH 343, orBEHS 340.ANTH 344 Cultural Anthropology andLinguistics (3)(Formerly ANTH 340. Fulfills the international perspective requirement.)An interdisciplinary, intermediate-level, exploration<strong>of</strong> contemporary issues in cultural anthropology and linguistics.Discussion covers variation in human social organization, ethnographicfield methods, world views, relationships amongst cultures,as well as cultural dimensions <strong>of</strong> language. Focus is on theoryand its application in dealing with concerns in our global society.Students may receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses:ANTH 340, ANTH 344, or BEHS 340.ANTH 398 Intermediate Special Topics inAnthropology (1–3)A presentation <strong>of</strong> anthropological perspectives on selectedtopics <strong>of</strong> broad general interest. May be repeated to a maximum<strong>of</strong> 6 credits when topics differ.ANTH 398B Medicine, Health, andCulture (3)(Fulfills the international perspective requirement.) An examination<strong>of</strong> worldwide variations in medical practices and beliefs abouthealth. Medical treatment and health care in the contemporaryUnited States are also considered.110
