SPCH 420 Group Discussion and DecisionMaking (3)Prerequisite: A 100-level speech performance course or COMM300. A study <strong>of</strong> current theory, research, and techniques regardingsmall-group process. Group dynamics, leadership, and decisionmaking are covered.SPCH 424 Communication in ComplexOrganizations (3)Prerequisite: A course in speech communication or COMM 300.An examination <strong>of</strong> the structure and function <strong>of</strong> communicationin organizations. Organizational climate and culture, informationflow, networks, and role relationships are major themes.SPCH 426 Negotiation and ConflictManagement (3)(Fulfills the civic responsibility requirement.) Prerequisite: Acourse in speech communication or COMM 300. A study <strong>of</strong>the role <strong>of</strong> communication in shaping negotiation and conflictprocesses and outcomes. Simulation and role play are used tomodel workplace practices.SPCH 470 Listening (3)(Formerly Theories <strong>of</strong> Listening.) Prerequisite: A course in speechcommunication or COMM 300. A survey <strong>of</strong> theories <strong>of</strong> the listeningprocess. Emphasis is on functional analysis <strong>of</strong> listeningbehavior. Students may receive credit only once under this coursenumber.SPCH 472 Theories <strong>of</strong> NonverbalCommunication (3)Prerequisite: A course in speech communication or COMM 300.A survey <strong>of</strong> nonverbal communication in human interactions.Theory and research on proxemics, kinesics, and paralinguisticsare recognized and identified in expressions <strong>of</strong> relationship, affect,and orientation both within and across cultures.SPCH 486A Internship in Speech ThroughCo-op (3)Prerequisite: Formal admission to the Co-op program (programrequirements are listed on p. 18). An opportunity to combineacademic theory with new, career-related experience in speech.At least 12 hours per week must be devoted to new tasks for aminimum <strong>of</strong> 180 hours during the Co-op session; four new tasksmust be delineated in the Learning Proposal; and the course requirementsmust be completed. May be repeated upon approval<strong>of</strong> a new Learning Proposal that demonstrates new tasks and objectivesrelated to speech and that continues to advance application<strong>of</strong> academic theory in the workplace. Students may earn upto 15 semester hours in all internship coursework through Co-optoward a first bachelor’s degree and up to 9 semester hours towarda second bachelor’s degree.
