GERO 496R Geriatric Case Management (1)A review <strong>of</strong> the concept <strong>of</strong> geriatric case management, includingthe needs <strong>of</strong> older adults and appropriate interventions.GERO 497 Special Topics in Administrationand Planning (1–3)Specialized study in gerontology and related topics focusing onadministration and planning. May be repeated to a maximum <strong>of</strong>6 credits when topics differ.GERO 497D Retirement Planning: ManagingYour Estate (1)(For nonlawyers.) An examination <strong>of</strong> the principles and strategiesused to settle an estate. Topics include administration <strong>of</strong> wills andestates, ownership and transfer <strong>of</strong> property, will substitutes, trustsand powers <strong>of</strong> appointment, strategies for giving charitable gifts,and gift and estate taxes. Students may receive credit for only one<strong>of</strong> the following courses: FMCD 499D or GERO 497D.GERO 497K Strategic Planning forRetirement (1)A discussion <strong>of</strong> the techniques for achieving financial independenceat retirement and the economic, governmental, and businessfactors that work against reaching this goal. Topics coveredinclude Social Security and Medicare; pensions and tax-deferredsavings plans, including 401(k)s and IRAs; and how much to savefor retirement throughout the life span.GERO 497M Managed Health Care Servicesin Gerontology (1)A comparative analysis <strong>of</strong> the delivery <strong>of</strong> managed health servicesto retirees and the elderly in the United States. Focus is on thefinancing <strong>of</strong> comprehensive benefits and services while consideringdemographics, employer-sponsored approaches, governmentsponsoredapproaches, indemnity approaches, and self-sponsoredapproaches. Key concepts examined include employer/retiree costsharingcoverage, tax-deferred funding options, purchasing cooperatives,health alliances, fiscal management, and capitation.GERO 497N Vocational Planning inGerontology (1)A review <strong>of</strong> the various vocational pathways in gerontology.Topics include suggested plans <strong>of</strong> study, pr<strong>of</strong>essional affiliations,and market demands.Government and PoliticsCourses in government and politics (designated GVPT) may beapplied as appropriate (according to individual program requirements)toward• the general education requirement in the social and behavioralsciences;• a minor in government and politics, African American studies,or social science;• a major in social science;• a certificate in various policy-related areas; and• electives.A description <strong>of</strong> the curriculum for the government and politicsminor begins on p. 63. Contemporary politicalissues in Korea and the legacy <strong>of</strong> past governments’ relationswith local governments are discussed.GVPT 199B Political Reform inSouth Korea (1)A basic study <strong>of</strong> the reform movement <strong>of</strong> the past civilian government<strong>of</strong> Kim, Yong-sam. The many challenges faced by the newgovernment in attempting to remodel the bureaucratic process afterthree decades <strong>of</strong> military-backed leadership are discussed.176
