Requirements for the MinorA minor in fire science requires the completion <strong>of</strong> 15 semesterhours <strong>of</strong> coursework in fire science, at least 9 <strong>of</strong> which must beearned in courses numbered 300 or above. Specific course requirementsare listed below. If a specific course required for the minoris taken instead to satisfy the requirements for the major, anothercourse in the same discipline should be substituted to fulfill therequired minimum number <strong>of</strong> semester hours. Any course used toreplace an upper-level course should also be classified as upperlevel.For a listing <strong>of</strong> all the requirements for the bachelor’s degree, studentsshould refer to pp. 22–23.Fire Science Coursework (15 s.h.)Foundation Course (3 s.h.)Students must take one <strong>of</strong> the following foundation courses:FSCN 302 Advanced Fire Administration (3)FSCN 304 Fire-Personnel Management (3)Supplemental Minor Courses (12 s.h.)Students must take four fire science courses listed as fulfilling the requirementsfor the major.General StudiesStudents may seek an academic major in general studies.Major in General StudiesThe general studies major allows students to take courses in a particularfocus area and related discipline or in an interdisciplinarycombination. It allows the student to draw from various disciplinesthat provide a body <strong>of</strong> knowledge appropriate to an identified area<strong>of</strong> interest (for example, an aspect <strong>of</strong> culture, a historical period, ora geographical location). The interdisciplinary approach emphasizesanalysis and synthesis <strong>of</strong> diverse theory and practice.ObjectivesThe student who graduates with a major in general studies will beable to•Understand and apply key concepts from chosen disciplines.•Develop effective written and oral communication skills consistentwith the chosen areas <strong>of</strong> study.•Apply skills and concepts to problems <strong>of</strong> modern life.•Define an approach grounded in the chosen disciplines andappropriate to the study <strong>of</strong> a specific topic, area, or theme.•Develop effective skills in cross-disciplinary comparison, historicaland critical analysis, research, and evaluation.•Use computers for communication and research.•Demonstrate information literacy through research and resourceevaluation appropriate to the chosen area <strong>of</strong> study.Requirements for the MajorA major in general studies requires the completion <strong>of</strong> 30 semesterhours <strong>of</strong> coursework appropriate to the option chosen (in-depthfocus, interdisciplinary breadth, or individual studies); at least15 semester hours must be earned in courses numbered 300 orabove. The general studies major requires the prior approval <strong>of</strong> aUMUC advisor. Students are required to identify specific coursechoices and objectives for the proposed course <strong>of</strong> study. Distributionrequirements for each option are listed below.For a listing <strong>of</strong> all the requirements for the bachelor’s degree, studentsshould refer to pp. 22–23.Major OptionsStudents must take one <strong>of</strong> the following options for the generalstudies major.In-Depth FocusFor the in-depth focus, students combine courses from two disciplines:a focus area plus a supporting area. Students must take18 semester hours in the focus area and 9 semester hours in thesupporting area, as well as 3 semester hours in related elective coursework.At least 12 semester hours in the focus area and 3 semesterhours in the supporting area must be earned in courses numbered300 or above.Interdisciplinary BreadthFor the interdisciplinary breadth option, students combine coursesfrom three disciplines, with a minimum <strong>of</strong> 12 semester hours ineach <strong>of</strong> two areas, plus 6 semester hours in the third. At least half<strong>of</strong> the semester hours in each area must be earned in coursesnumbered 300 or above.Individual StudiesThe individual studies option provides an opportunity for studentsto create and complete an individualized course <strong>of</strong> studythat combines <strong>of</strong>ferings from multiple disciplines. With the priorapproval <strong>of</strong> a UMUC advisor, the student may design an interdisciplinaryprogram <strong>of</strong> study around a clearly defined academic goalthat cannot reasonably be satisfied in an existing curriculum atthe university.61
