C E R T I F I C A T E P R O G R A M STo better help working adults meet their educational goals, UMUC<strong>of</strong>fers a full range <strong>of</strong> certificate programs geared toward helpingmembers <strong>of</strong> the workforce stay current in today’s demanding jobmarket. Certificate programs <strong>of</strong>fer working adults a convenient,flexible way to earn credentials for career advancement. Manyprograms are available online.All courses for the certificate programs carry college credit and maybe applied to a degree. Current students may benefit by earning acertificate while pursuing a degree. Such students must apply forthe certificate before they receive their degree.Certificates are awarded upon successful completion <strong>of</strong> the requiredcoursework. An academic advisor must perform an <strong>of</strong>ficial evaluation<strong>of</strong> coursework before approving certificate completion. Allcertificates are issued and mailed by the Registrar’s Office. Transcriptsare updated to reflect certificate completion.CURRICULACertificates are available in the following areas. Specific requirements are listed foreach certificate. Certificate students must fulfill all course prerequisites;these may be satisfied by coursework, credit by examination,or prior-learning portfolio credit (under current policies forsuch credit). No more than half <strong>of</strong> the total credits for any certificatemay be earned through credit by examination, portfolio credit,or transfer credit from other schools. At least half <strong>of</strong> the totalcredits for any certificate must be earned through UMUC. Inaddition, at least half <strong>of</strong> the total credits for any certificate mustbe earned through graded coursework.Students who wish to enroll in certificate programs must first beadmitted as UMUC students in order to take certificate courses.Students are responsible for notifying UMUC <strong>of</strong> their intention tocomplete certificate work.Students may pursue a degree and certificate simultaneously. Theapplication for any certificate completed while in progress towardthe bachelor’s degree must be submitted prior to award <strong>of</strong> thebachelor’s degree.
