External Sources <strong>of</strong> <strong>College</strong> Credit(Further details and regulations are given in Appendix B andAppendix C.)UMUC will not award credit for courses that repeat work done elsewhere.Students who have earned credit at other colleges or universitiesare responsible for determining whether courses they plan to takeat UMUC would duplicate any previously earned credit. In certaindisciplines, some <strong>of</strong> the content <strong>of</strong> community college courses mayoverlap that <strong>of</strong> beginning upper-level UMUC courses. Students whoare in doubt should consult an advisor before registering.Credit by TransferCredit toward a UMUC degree may be assigned for work completedthrough the kinds <strong>of</strong> institutions described in the following sections.As many as 45 semester hours <strong>of</strong> these transfer credits may be countedtoward the associate’s degree; as many as 90 semester hours may becounted toward a bachelor’s degree. A student who wants to transfercredit from other institutions to UMUC should request a review <strong>of</strong>previous credit from an enrollment specialist to determine the applicability<strong>of</strong> those credits to a degree from UMUC. No transfer creditis accepted without <strong>of</strong>ficial transcripts.Credits earned at other institutions during a period <strong>of</strong> disciplinarysuspension or dismissal from UMUC are not accepted in transfer.Credit from Other <strong>College</strong>s and UniversitiesWhen the grade earned was at least C, transfer credits from regionallyaccredited two- and four-year colleges and universities may be acceptedfor courses that apply to the student’s curriculum and do not duplicateother courses for which credit has been awarded. Transfer credit foranother institution’s prior learning program may be accepted if it islisted on the transcript with a passing grade.Credit from Junior <strong>College</strong>s and Community <strong>College</strong>sA total <strong>of</strong> 60 semester hours <strong>of</strong> credit from two-year institutions (juniorcolleges or community colleges) may be applied toward a bachelor’sdegree at UMUC. A student who has already completed 60 semesterhours may not apply further credit from a junior college or a communitycollege to a degree from UMUC.A student who initially enrolled in the public community colleges<strong>of</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong> will be admitted to UMUC in conformance with thepolicy developed and approved by the <strong>Maryland</strong> Higher EducationCommission. (Details are given in the section on transfer policiesin the appendices.) Students participating in one <strong>of</strong> the communitycollege alliances with UMUC should consult with their advisorsat both institutions if they plan to enroll in courses at bothinstitutions concurrently.Educational Experiences in the Armed ServicesUMUC grants credit for study completed in service schools and inMilitary Occupational Specialties (MOSs) on the basis <strong>of</strong> the recommendationsby the American Council on Education (ACE) in itsGuide to the Evaluation <strong>of</strong> Educational Experiences in the ArmedServices. Such credit is granted only if it is applicable to the student’schosen curriculum. UMUC generally accepts recommendations <strong>of</strong>ACE for lower-level and upper-level credit. Recommendations madeby ACE for vocational or technical credit are considered on the samebasis as, and with the same limitations as, those placed on nonmilitarysources <strong>of</strong> credit.Community <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Air ForceUMUC awards credit for study at technical schools <strong>of</strong> the U.S. AirForce in accordance with recommendations from the Community<strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> the Air Force (CCAF). Credits must be applicable to thestudent’s chosen curriculum at UMUC, must meet other UMUCrequirements for transfer credit, and are subject to the limitationsdescribed on the next page.• When a student presents a CCAF transcript, credits are awardedon the basis <strong>of</strong> evaluation by the CCAF for courses completedafter December 1973 (ACE no longer evaluated Air Forceschools after that date).•Since the CCAF records satisfactorily completed courses as S (satisfactory)and specifies that S equals a grade <strong>of</strong> C or better, credit maybe applied wherever appropriate in the UMUC curriculum. Coursesthat are vocational or technical may be used only as electives andonly toward the BS degree, up to a maximum <strong>of</strong> 21 semester hours.• All credit from the CCAF is lower level and is applicable only t<strong>of</strong>reshman and sophomore requirements.Servicemembers Opportunity <strong>College</strong>As a designated four-year Servicemembers Opportunity <strong>College</strong>(SOC), UMUC provides opportunities for men and women in themilitary services to complete educational programs through variousmodes <strong>of</strong> instruction scheduled at times appropriate to their dutyassignments. The SOC institutions have also developed a series <strong>of</strong>degree networks that correspond to Army, Navy, Coast Guard, andMarine career specialties and lead to associate’s degrees (SOCAD-2,SOCNAV-2, SOCCOAST-2, and SOCMAR-2 programs) andbachelor’s degrees (SOCAD-4, SOCNAV-4, SOCCOAST-4, andSOCMAR-4 programs). The SOC concept itself was developedjointly by educational representatives from each <strong>of</strong> the military services,from the U.S. Department <strong>of</strong> Defense, and from 13 <strong>of</strong> the nation’sleading associations <strong>of</strong> higher education.19
