Graduate SchoolAfter the undergraduate degree, <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong> <strong>University</strong><strong>College</strong> can help students continue their education through graduatestudies. Established in 1978 to prepare business, industry,government, and not-for-pr<strong>of</strong>it midlevel managers, UMUC’sGraduate School—now with more than 5,600 students—is celebratingits 25th anniversary. Faculty members are distinguishedby their extensive pr<strong>of</strong>essional managerial experience as well as bytheir advanced education and teaching ability. All master’s degreeprograms, except those leading to the Master <strong>of</strong> Business Administration,consist <strong>of</strong> 33–39 semester hours <strong>of</strong> graduate study.UMUC currently has 18 graduate degree programs, including aMaster <strong>of</strong> Arts in Teaching, a Master <strong>of</strong> Business Administration,a Master <strong>of</strong> Education, a Master <strong>of</strong> S<strong>of</strong>tware Engineering, and aDoctor <strong>of</strong> Management. The Master <strong>of</strong> Science degree is availablein accounting and financial management, accounting and informationtechnology, biotechnology studies, computer systems management,e-commerce, environmental management, health careadministration, information technology, management, technologymanagement, and telecommunications management.The Graduate School also <strong>of</strong>fers several executive degree programs(including Executive Programs leading to a Master <strong>of</strong> BusinessAdministration, a Master <strong>of</strong> Science in technology management,or a Master <strong>of</strong> Science in information technology).Dual degree programs enable students to acquire two graduatedegrees for substantially fewer credits than would be required ifthe two degrees were earned separately. The Graduate School also<strong>of</strong>fers more than 35 certificate programs in areas <strong>of</strong> distance education,e-commerce, general management, information technologysystems, international management, and management <strong>of</strong> technologicalsystems.The Graduate School also <strong>of</strong>fers an accelerated route to teachercertification in <strong>Maryland</strong>, preparing students with a bachelor’sdegree education to teach in the <strong>Maryland</strong> public school system.Courses taken through this resident teacher certification programmay also be applied to either the Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in Teaching or theMaster <strong>of</strong> Education programs at UMUC.For more information, students should call 800-888-UMUC, ext.2565, or e-mail gradschool@info.umuc.edu.LEADERSHIP FOR THE FUTUREThe <strong>Maryland</strong> Higher Education Commission projects that by2011, one-third <strong>of</strong> all students enrolled in the <strong>University</strong> System<strong>of</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong> will be studying at UMUC. Since 1997, enrollmentsin UMUC’s online courses have grown almost 2,200 percent andare expected to continue to climb. Agreements with communitycolleges are also expanding with the introduction <strong>of</strong> the newBachelor <strong>of</strong> Technical and Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Studies degree program.UMUC also plans to pilot a new associate’s to master’s degreeprogram in secondary education to help the state meet its criticalshortfall <strong>of</strong> secondary school teachers.Under the leadership <strong>of</strong> UMUC President Gerald A. Heeger,UMUC is taking the lead in higher education to enable studentsin <strong>Maryland</strong> and worldwide to reach their academic goals.7
