BMGT 361 Health Services Management (3)(Formerly HMGT 320.) A thorough treatment <strong>of</strong> the conceptsand principles <strong>of</strong> effective managerial leadership in a health servicesorganization. The management process is explored and majortheories and classic literature in the field are reviewed. Emphasis ison critical aspects <strong>of</strong> managing people: leadership, communication,motivation, and decision making. Students may receive credit foronly one <strong>of</strong> the following courses: BMGT 361 or HMGT 320.BMGT 364 Management and OrganizationTheory (3)Prerequisite: BMGT 110 or at least two years <strong>of</strong> business and managementexperience. A study <strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> theories aboutmanagement and organizations. Processes and functions <strong>of</strong> managementdiscussed include the communication process, the role <strong>of</strong> themanager as an organizer and director, the determination <strong>of</strong> goals,and the allocation <strong>of</strong> responsibilities. Students may receive creditfor only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses: BMGT 364, TEMN 202,TEMN 300, TMGT 301, or TMGT 302.BMGT 365 Leadership and Change (3)(Fulfills the civic responsibility requirement.) Prerequisite: BMGT364. An exploration <strong>of</strong> the challenges to effective leadership andmanagement that the contemporary manager faces in a rapidlychanging environment. Focus is on leadership styles and motivationaltechniques conducive to high performance in various organizationalsettings with a very diverse workforce. Topics include issues in thedesign <strong>of</strong> organizations, the corporate/organizational culture, thedesign and enrichment <strong>of</strong> jobs, and communication within organizations.Students may receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> the followingcourses: BMGT 365, MGMT 300, MGST 310, or TEMN 310.BMGT 366 Managing in the Public Sector (3)An exploration <strong>of</strong> the nature <strong>of</strong> public-sector management, includingissues <strong>of</strong> public accountability, the budgetary process, and personnel.Models <strong>of</strong> decision making and the characteristics <strong>of</strong> thepolicy-making process at federal, state, and local levels are examined.Methods and mechanisms <strong>of</strong> policy analysis, including cost/benefitanalysis and program evaluation, are introduced. Students mayreceive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses: BMGT 366 orTMGT 305.BMGT 367 Health Insurance Analysis (3)(Formerly HMGT 498D.) An analysis <strong>of</strong> major health insuranceissues and a study <strong>of</strong> health insurance administration for varioushealth care entities, including managed-care providers. Topicsinclude coverage by Medicare, Medicaid, and other health insuranceprograms and relationships between health network practices andinsurance companies. Health insurance planning and programmingare examined from the perspective <strong>of</strong> both businesses and healthservices providers. Students may receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> thefollowing courses: BMGT 367 or HMGT 498D.BMGT 368 Managing OrganizationalChange (3)Prerequisite: BMGT 364. Introduction to the dynamics <strong>of</strong> institutionalizingsmall- and large- scale organizational change efforts. Theobjective is to provide insight to the limitations <strong>of</strong> the concept <strong>of</strong>planned organizational change. The factors that inhibit change fromoccurring gracefully and the role that individual behavior, group behavior,organizational structure, and organizational culture have inthe planned change process are explored. Students may receive creditfor only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses: BMGT 368 or TMGT 350.BMGT 369 Health Practice Management (3)(Formerly HMGT 498E.) An applied management survey <strong>of</strong> majorconcepts <strong>of</strong> managing medical, health, and dental group servicespractices. Practices examined include preferred provider organizations,physician hospital organizations, independent practice associations,management services organizations, and dental group practicenetworks. Analysis covers such issues as structuring pr<strong>of</strong>essionalcompensation systems for practices and networks and negotiatingwith insurance companies regarding contract reimbursements. Topicsalso include regulatory guidelines and requirements for medicalequipment and pharmaceutical storage and dispensing, and determination<strong>of</strong> benefits <strong>of</strong>fered to practice and network employees.Students may receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses:BMGT 369 or HMGT 498E.BMGT 370 Introduction to TransportationManagement (3)Prerequisite: BMGT 364. An examination <strong>of</strong> transportation as itrelates to the movement <strong>of</strong> people and goods between points. Topicsinclude the roles <strong>of</strong> the private and public sectors (includingderegulation), carrier modes, demand for passenger and freighttransportation, transportation pricing, management, contemporarypublic policy issues, and managerial strategies in transportation.128
