Majorapproaches (such as techniques, subject matter, form, and evaluation)are the focus. Painting, sculpture, architecture, and thegraphic arts are discussed.ARTH 335 17th-Century Art in theNetherlands (3)(Formerly ARTH 435. Fulfills the historical or international perspectiverequirement.) An exploration <strong>of</strong> painting from the DutchGolden Age—the age <strong>of</strong> Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals, Steen, andLeyster. History painting, still life, landscape, portraiture, andscenes <strong>of</strong> everyday life are studied. Issues <strong>of</strong> collecting art are alsodiscussed. Students may receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> the followingcourses: ARTH 335 or ARTH 435.ARTH 361 American Art Since 1876 (3)(Fulfills the historical perspective requirement.) An overview <strong>of</strong>painting, sculpture, architecture, and the decorative arts in NorthAmerica after 1876. Students may receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong>the following courses: ARTH 361, ARTH 460, or ARTH 477.ARTH 370 History <strong>of</strong> World Art I (3)(Fulfills the historical or international perspective requirement.) Asurvey <strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> world visual art in its various forms,examining and comparing the expression <strong>of</strong> cultural and aestheticvalues in different parts <strong>of</strong> the world, from prehistory to 1400,when the European Age <strong>of</strong> Exploration began and world culturescame into contact.ARTH 371 History <strong>of</strong> World Art II (3)(Fulfills the historical or international perspective requirement.)A survey <strong>of</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> world visual art in its variousforms, examining and comparing the expression <strong>of</strong> cultural andaesthetic values in different parts <strong>of</strong> the world, from 1400 andthe European Age <strong>of</strong> Exploration to modern day. The effects <strong>of</strong>contact among world cultures on both the form and content <strong>of</strong>artistic expression in the world is examined.ARTH 380 Masterpieces <strong>of</strong> Painting (3)(Fulfills the historical or international perspective requirement.)Analysis <strong>of</strong> selected masterworks <strong>of</strong> painting, intended to revealthe creative process, the personality <strong>of</strong> the artist, and the culturalcontext. Students may receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> the followingcourses: ARTH 320 or ARTH 380.ARTH 381 Masterpieces <strong>of</strong> Sculpture (3)(Fulfills the historical or international perspective requirement.)Analysis <strong>of</strong> selected sculptural masterworks, intended to reveal thecreative process, the personality <strong>of</strong> the artist, and the cultural context.Students may receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> the followingcourses: ARTH 330 or ARTH 381.ARTH 382 Masterpieces <strong>of</strong> Architecture (3)(Formerly ARTH 340. Fulfills the historical or international perspectiverequirement.) An overview <strong>of</strong> painting, sculpture, andarchitecture in Europe and America from the late 19th century tothe end <strong>of</strong> World War II. Students may receive credit for only one<strong>of</strong> the following courses: ARTH 350, ARTH 450, or ARTH 455.ARTH 456 20th-Century Art from 1945 (3)(Fulfills the historical or international perspective requirement.)An overview <strong>of</strong> painting, sculpture, and architecture in Europeand North America from 1945 to the present.
