MGST 162 Personnel Counseling (3)A study <strong>of</strong> counseling as part <strong>of</strong> a supervisor’s responsibilities. Thecounseling process is examined through role-playing exercises. Focusis on developing skills in areas such as active listening and observing,focusing on the problem, empathetic understanding, guidingdecision making, and recognizing referral situations. Counselingsituations (e.g., performance appraisals, gender issues, personal crisesthat affect work performance, and performance problems) aredrawn from the work environment.MGST 310 Managerial Leadership (3)Prerequisite: BMGT 110 or equivalent business or management experience.Advanced study <strong>of</strong> the characteristics <strong>of</strong> leaders, as opposed tothose <strong>of</strong> managers and administrators. Concepts <strong>of</strong> influence, power,and effectiveness are explored. The situational approach to leadership,with its effects on participation, delegation, and decision making, isalso considered. Practice in the methods and techniques <strong>of</strong> effectiveleadership (such as motivation, delegation, conflict resolution, employeeperformance, and evaluation) is provided. Students may receivecredit for only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses: BMGT 365, MGMT300, MGST 310, or TEMN 310.MGST 320 Governmental Accounting (3)Prerequisites: BMGT 110 (or equivalent business or managementexperience) and ACCT 221. An examination <strong>of</strong> accounting andreporting concepts and standards, as well as procedures that apply tostate and federal organizations. Financial management factors areexamined, along with problems peculiar to the not-for-pr<strong>of</strong>it sector.MGST 398 Special Topics in ManagementStudies (1–3)Investigation <strong>of</strong> special topics focusing on relevant problems <strong>of</strong>general interest. May be repeated when topics differ.MGST 486A Internship in ManagementStudies Through Co-op (3)Prerequisite: Formal admission to the Co-op program (programrequirements are listed on p. 18). An opportunity to combineacademic theory with new, career-related experience in managementstudies. At least 12 hours per week must be devoted to newtasks for a minimum <strong>of</strong> 180 hours during the Co-op session; fournew tasks must be delineated in the Learning Proposal; and thecourse requirements must be completed. May be repeated uponapproval <strong>of</strong> a new Learning Proposal that demonstrates new tasksand objectives related to management studies and that continuesto advance application <strong>of</strong> academic theory in the workplace. Studentsmay earn up to 15 semester hours in all internship courseworkthrough Co-op toward a first bachelor’s degree and up to9 semester hours toward a second bachelor’s degre. Co-op creditsmay not be used for general education requirements and, unlessotherwise specified, no more than 6 Co-op credits may be used inthe academic major and minor (combined).MGST 486B Internship in ManagementStudies Through Co-op (6)Prerequisite: Formal admission to the Co-op program (programrequirements are listed on p. 18).
