GVPT 377L U.N. Peacekeeping (1)A study <strong>of</strong> the United Nations and its efforts to maintain or initiatepeace in world conflicts. Topics include the Cold War, the end <strong>of</strong>that bipolar system, and current peacekeeping efforts around theglobe. The effectiveness <strong>of</strong> the organization is examined. Assignmentsinclude advanced reading and research. Students may receive creditfor only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses: GVPT 199O or GVPT 377L.GVPT 377M Austrian Political Issues:Post–World War II to the Present (1)An analysis <strong>of</strong> the most pressing issues in Austrian politics, bothwithin the international framework and in internal Austrian affairs.Emphasis is on post–World War II developments and continuities:the system <strong>of</strong> social partnership, the party system and democraticbehavior, and coming to terms with Austria’s Nazi past before andafter the Waldheim affair. The changes after joining the EuropeanUnion in 1995 (in the areas <strong>of</strong> economics, military security, and status<strong>of</strong> neutrality) and Austria’s role vis-à-vis Eastern Central Europeare also discussed. Assignments include advanced reading and research.Students may receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses:GVPT 199M or GVPT 377M.GVPT 377N Contemporary Issues in ModernGermany (1)An exploration <strong>of</strong> the critical social, political, economic, and culturaldevelopments that shape Germany as a reunified state. Topics includethe dynamics <strong>of</strong> reunification, the challenges <strong>of</strong> Germany’s Europeanand international roles in the post–Cold War era, Germany’s socialand economic structures, the political culture, problems <strong>of</strong> “belttightening”in this former “economic miracle” society, monetaryunion, NATO and defense, education reform, environment, taxation,labor, and foreigners and asylum seekers.GVPT 377O Nuclear Diplomacy and ArmsControl (1)A study <strong>of</strong> the changing role <strong>of</strong> nuclear weapons in world politics.Focus is on domestic and international factors affecting nuclearprograms and arms control policies.GVPT 377P Ethics in International Politics (1)An analysis <strong>of</strong> the countless problems <strong>of</strong> inter-state and interhumanrelationships at the global level. Topics include differingcustoms, principles, and standards <strong>of</strong> conduct.GVPT 377S Black Africa, Black America (1)A study <strong>of</strong> Africa as the ancestral and spiritual home <strong>of</strong> BlackAmerica. Topics include the particular struggle <strong>of</strong> the African peoplesfor emancipation, the role <strong>of</strong> Africa in contemporary worldaffairs, the contributions <strong>of</strong> eminent personalities to the advancement<strong>of</strong> the Black race and the development <strong>of</strong> the Civil Rightsmovement in the United States, and independence movements inAfrica beginning in the 1950s.GVPT 377T The Declaration <strong>of</strong>Independence and the U.S. Constitution (1)An examination <strong>of</strong> the events, personalities, and political philosophythat led to the declaration. The personalities and events thatgave rise to the Grand Convention and its final product, the U.S.Constitution, are also explored.GVPT 377U Critical Presidential Electionsin American History (1)An examination <strong>of</strong> several critical presidential elections, fromJefferson’s election in 1800 to the present. Key personalities,major issues, and the election process are explored.GVPT 399B The Legislative Process andLobbying Techniques (3)An introduction to the organization and functioning <strong>of</strong> Congress.Topics include basic rules and procedures and the influence <strong>of</strong> lobbyists.How a bill becomes law and techniques <strong>of</strong> lobbying are discussed.GVPT 399C Lawyers and the AdversarySystem (3)An overview <strong>of</strong> the adversary system <strong>of</strong> justice, from the perspective<strong>of</strong> lawyers, their clients, and society as a whole. Topics includethe basic structure <strong>of</strong> the adversary system, criminal law, the socialand ideological foundations <strong>of</strong> the adversary system, and the peculiarrole <strong>of</strong> lawyers in the system. Comparisons are made with the legalsystems <strong>of</strong> several European countries and the People’s Republic <strong>of</strong>China. Assignments include debating two topics related to the adversarysystem.GVPT 399G Recent Right-Wing Terrorism inthe United States (1)A brief survey <strong>of</strong> right-wing terrorism as practiced by various entities(such as the Ku Klux Klan, contemporary survivalists, religiouszealots, and promoters <strong>of</strong> intolerance).179
