ENGL 396 Critical Analysis in Reading andWriting (6)(Yields 3 English credits and 3 humanities credits. Fulfills thegeneral education requirements in intensive upper-level writingand the arts and humanities.) Prerequisite: ENGL 101. A study <strong>of</strong>various strategies for improving thinking abilities and for evaluatingthe claims, reasoning, and evidence presented in articles andbooks from a variety <strong>of</strong> disciplines. Focus is on improving skills,explaining ideas effectively, and analyzing persuasive strategiesused by others. Some attention is given to establishing goals fordeveloping critical-thinking habits. Assignments include composinga total <strong>of</strong> 6,000 words (approximately 25 pages). Studentsmay receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses: ENGL396, COMM 395 Critical Thinking and Writing, HUMN 395,or HUMN 396.ENGL 406 Shakespeare: Power and Justice (3)(Fulfills the historical perspective or civic responsibility requirement.)Prerequisite: ENGL 101. An intensive study <strong>of</strong> Shakespeare’sdramatic masterpieces as illustrations <strong>of</strong> the concepts <strong>of</strong> powerand justice, both in a historically specific social and cultural contextand as timeless concerns reflecting the human condition.Students may receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses:ENGL 406 or HUMN 440.ENGL 425 Modern British Literature (3)(Fulfills the historical or international perspective requirement.)Prerequisite: ENGL 101. Discussion and critical examination <strong>of</strong>students’ work (poetry, fiction, and/or drama). Constructive suggestionsfor improvement are <strong>of</strong>fered. Students may receive creditfor only one <strong>of</strong> the following courses: ENGL 480 or ENGL 498.ENGL 481 The Art <strong>of</strong> Narration (3)Prerequisite: ENGL 101. An overview <strong>of</strong> the scope, power, andtechniques <strong>of</strong> narration, the oldest and most versatile form <strong>of</strong>writing. Topics include the applicability <strong>of</strong> narration to historic,dramatic, and business purposes. Focus is on identifying, analyzing,and practicing the following skills: freewriting, developingstructure, delineating episodes, subdividing steps, improving pacing,writing purposeful sentences, controlling time, creating substance,heightening authenticity with voice, and providing interpretation.Students may receive credit for only one <strong>of</strong> the followingcourses: ENGL 479E or ENGL 481.ENGL 482 Creative Writing: Writing theNovel (3)(Fulfills the general education requirement in communications.)Prerequisite: ENGL 101. Exposure to the critical process and consultationon plans and manuscripts. A five-step approach is followedfor beginning a novel. Emphasis is on fiction-writing techniques,critical analysis, and creative philosophy. Critiques aregiven by students and teacher. Students may receive credit foronly one <strong>of</strong> the following courses: ENGL 482 or ENGL 498N.ENGL 434 American Drama (3)Prerequisite: ENGL 101. An examination <strong>of</strong> representativeauthors in the development <strong>of</strong> American drama, with emphasison post–World War II writers. Playwrights studied may includeGlaspell, O’Neill, Hellman, Miller, Williams, Hansberry, Inge,Albee, Shepard, Wilson, Howe, Henley, and Hwang. Film andtelevision adaptations may be included.164
