A S S O C I A T E ’ S D E G R E E C U R R I C U L AASSOCIATE OF ARTS DEGREEThe curricula and courses listed below are available only to activedutymilitary personnel and certain others who conform to specialstipulations.RequirementsThe Associate <strong>of</strong> Arts degree (AA) requires the completion <strong>of</strong> aminimum <strong>of</strong> 60 semester hours, at least 15 <strong>of</strong> which must betaken through UMUC. Of these 60 semester hours, 32 semesterhours must be earned in courses that fulfill the general educationrequirements listed below. The remaining 28 semester hours mustsatisfy the requirements <strong>of</strong> the curriculum the student has selected.A grade-point average <strong>of</strong> 2.0 or higher in all courses taken throughUMUC is required. A student should complete one associate'sdegree before applying for another.General Education Requirements (32 s.h.)The general education requirements for the associate’s degree correspondto those for the bachelor’s degree (listed on p. 22), withthese two exceptions:• An upper-level intensive writing course is not required for theassociate’s degree.•Only one 1-semester-hour course in information literacy andresearch methods is required to fulfill the interdisciplinary oremerging issues requirement for the associate’s degree.Curriculum Requirements (28 s.h.)In addition to the general education requirements, students musttake 28 semester hours <strong>of</strong> coursework related to their educationalgoals; at least 9 semester hours must be earned through UMUC.They may choose a general curriculum or a specialized curriculumwith its own particular requirements (detailed at right and on thefollowing pages). Students must earn a grade <strong>of</strong> C or higher in allcurriculum courses. Students who anticipate seeking a bachelor’sdegree should select courses that will advance that goal.General CurriculumThe Associate <strong>of</strong> Arts general curriculum is for adult studentswho wish to pursue their own educational goals. They may dothis by combining related courses from several disciplines, exploringseveral interests at once, or choosing a variety <strong>of</strong> courses fromthroughout UMUC’s <strong>of</strong>ferings. Students in this program acceptresponsibility for developing a curriculum that meets their specificobjectives. They are encouraged to seek assistance from academicadvisors in arranging their curriculum as appropriate totheir personal interests and future educational plans.Specialized CurriculaThe Associate <strong>of</strong> Arts specialized curricula are for adult students whowish to pursue a specific career or educational goal, <strong>of</strong>ten as a basis forfurther study toward the bachelor’s degree. Each <strong>of</strong> the specialized curriculahas its own requirements. Students should take careful note <strong>of</strong>course prerequisites and recommended course sequences.
