8.1.17 Network for Educational Technology (NET) ETHZ<br />
General description and organisation<br />
NET is part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Centre for Higher Education, an ETH infrastructure division which is directly responsible to <strong>the</strong> rector.<br />
NET has been founded in 1996 and divides into 5 sub-units: ELBA (E-Learning-Baukasten), groupware/LMS ,ecollaboration,<br />
Filep and <strong>the</strong> e-learning strategy implementation team. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore NET is currently establishing<br />
competence for e-assessment. NET and <strong>the</strong> Centre for Higher Education are currently adjusting <strong>the</strong>ir business areas<br />
according to <strong>the</strong> new elearning strategy <strong>of</strong> ETHZ.<br />

Mission<br />
NET is responsible for a reasonable use <strong>of</strong> technologies for teaching and learning and thus fosters innovative didactical<br />
scenarios. NET <strong>of</strong>fers a wide range <strong>of</strong> services: From <strong>the</strong> evaluation and selection <strong>of</strong> new applications to <strong>the</strong>ir hosting,<br />
from supporting <strong>the</strong>ir use in teaching and learning to evaluating <strong>the</strong>ir success, from <strong>the</strong> preparation <strong>of</strong> long-term<br />
elearning strategies to <strong>the</strong>ir actual implementation. All services distinctively focus on <strong>the</strong> customer as faculty members<br />
can choose between independent small standalone applications and complete web-based learning environments –<br />
subject to <strong>the</strong> individual usage scenarios. Most services are also open to faculty members <strong>of</strong> UZH.<br />
Activities<br />
• Didactical and technical support and consulting for <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> elearning<br />
• ELBA (E-Learning Baukasten): toolbox with easily usable, intuitive, single purpose applications for more<br />
interactivity (surveys, evaluations, homepages, discussion forum, wikis, quizzes, concept maps, document<br />
exchange)<br />
• Support for podcasting, production <strong>of</strong> an elearning Podcast<br />
• Support for e-collaboration<br />
• Support and consulting for teleteaching/videoconferencing in collaboration with Multimedia Services (ID)<br />
• Web based learning environments: Blackboard CE, ILIAS, Moodle, BSCW; Wimba Live Classroom, Marratech<br />
• Project for <strong>the</strong> introduction <strong>of</strong> online examinations<br />
• elearning certificate: a qualification programme for faculty members in cooperation with UZH and PHZH<br />
• Participation in <strong>the</strong> programme ‘didactica’ from DiZ, AfH and ELC<br />
• NET-ELC information event: once a year<br />
• NET-ELC-Tagung: once a year<br />
• NET à la carte: regular information events on elearning scenarios and tools<br />
• Several Blackboard, BSCW and ELBA instructor meetings per year<br />
• NET-website with up-to-date information, specific guidance, and general scenarios<br />
• Project partner <strong>of</strong> ETH's central weblog service<br />
• Support in <strong>the</strong> writing <strong>of</strong> applications for Filep (Fonds zur Förderung innovativer Lehrprojekte, ETHZ)<br />
• Review process for <strong>the</strong> project applications for <strong>the</strong> fonds Filep<br />
• Scientific publications<br />
• Implementation <strong>of</strong> a central-decentral support structure for elearning via elearning specialists at <strong>the</strong> Departments<br />
• Coordination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> E-Learning Specialists at <strong>the</strong> Departments <strong>of</strong> ETHZ<br />
• Development <strong>of</strong> an open content strategy<br />
• Establishing and maintaining <strong>of</strong> quality management processes for elearning<br />
Resources<br />
4.7 FTEs permanently, 4.6 FTEs financed through projects (Jan 2008). NET has 15 collaborators working in <strong>the</strong> five<br />
areas.<br />
Future perspectives<br />
NET exists since 1996 and did not depend on SVC funding.<br />
Remarks and comments<br />
NET is a well-established and accepted elearning competence and support centre.<br />
