8.1.18 Center for Research and Support <strong>of</strong> Training and its Technologies, EPFL<br />
General description and organization<br />
CRAFT is a hybrid unit with both a function <strong>of</strong> service for <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> elearning at <strong>the</strong> EPFL and an academic<br />
function as research unit on new learning technologies. For <strong>the</strong> former mandate it depends on <strong>the</strong> vice-president<br />
education <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> EPFL, for <strong>the</strong> second it depends on <strong>the</strong> Information and Communication Technologies Department. It is<br />
an interdisciplinary centre with computer scientists, engineers, psychologists and designers. It <strong>of</strong>fers a wide range <strong>of</strong><br />
services and training possibilities for teachers, Bachelor/Master and PhD students. CRAFT is also very active in<br />
research and is involved in a doctoral programme on new educational technologies funded by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Swiss</strong> National<br />
Science Foundation toge<strong>the</strong>r with USI and SCIL.<br />

Mission<br />
CRAFT <strong>of</strong>fers services and training and does research and publications. Moreover CRAFT is very active in <strong>the</strong><br />
development <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> educational policy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> EPFL and in <strong>the</strong> domain <strong>of</strong> evaluation <strong>of</strong> teaching.<br />
Activities<br />
• Support, consulting and training for teachers in different areas:<br />
o getting started<br />
o conceptual design<br />
o evaluation<br />
o groups <strong>of</strong> teachers meeting regularly for exchange <strong>of</strong> experiences<br />
• technology<br />
• 1 SVC project <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2 nd series (i-structures)<br />
• Training for teachers, Bachelor/Master students (CSCW, projects), PhD students (doctoral school, <strong>the</strong>sis defence)<br />
• management <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Moodle LMS at EPFL (about 15% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> EPFL courses)<br />
• Research and research projects in several areas:<br />
o collaborative learning<br />
o eyetracking<br />
o interactive furniture<br />
o mobile / spatial<br />

Future perspectives<br />
Funding is guaranteed from <strong>the</strong> ordinary budget <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> EPFL and is guaranteed for <strong>the</strong> next years. This is an established<br />
centre with a strong focus on educational design and mixed function <strong>of</strong> service and research.<br />
