<strong>Education</strong>al Curricula and Toolkits<br />

<strong>Diabetes</strong> <strong>Prevent</strong>ion <strong>Program</strong> (DPP) Lifestyle Intervention curriculum. <strong>Power</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Prevent</strong> is based on<br />

the fac<strong>to</strong>rs that proved successful in the DPP: preventing or delaying the onset of type 2<br />

diabetes by moderate weight loss achieved through eating a lower calorie diet and increasing<br />

physical activity. The lifestyle intervention of the DPP employed case managers who supported<br />

participants in setting personal goals, focusing on short-term and long-term outcomes, and<br />

learning behavior changes regarding food and activity. The DPP principles of goal setting,<br />

moni<strong>to</strong>ring, being accountable <strong>to</strong> a support group or case manager, and taking small steps that<br />

add up <strong>to</strong> long-term changes form the basis for the <strong>Power</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Prevent</strong> curriculum. Download from<br />

(NDEP). The Road <strong>to</strong> Health <strong>to</strong>olkit will be available from the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Diabetes</strong> <strong>Education</strong><br />

<strong>Program</strong> (NDEP) in early 2008. This multicomponent kit was developed <strong>to</strong> show community<br />

health workers and lay educa<strong>to</strong>rs how <strong>to</strong> bring the message of primary diabetes prevention <strong>to</strong><br />

people in their community. The kit contains a fipchart (available in English and in Spanish)<br />

that carries the message that diabetes prevention can be aided by moderate weight loss, healthy<br />

eating, and increased physical activity. The kit also includes an Activities Guide, a Resources<br />

Guide, a music CD and video promoting physical activity, a CD-ROM with handouts and <strong>Power</strong><br />

Point presentations, a User’s Guide, and more.<br />

Trainer’s Guide for Cancer <strong>Education</strong>. <strong>National</strong> Cancer Institute. This manual is an additional<br />

resource for program leaders. Its focus is on cancer education, but it offers excellent advice on<br />
