Small Steps lead <strong>to</strong> Big Rewards<br />

Preparing for the Session<br />

Learning Objectives<br />

At the end of this session, participants will be able <strong>to</strong>:<br />

Identify small steps that can lead <strong>to</strong> big rewards<br />

Explain that there are more than 50 ways <strong>to</strong> prevent diabetes<br />

Use <strong>to</strong>ols <strong>to</strong> help take small steps in food choices and in physical activity levels<br />

Materials, Supplies, Handouts, and Equipment<br />

In addition <strong>to</strong> the general materials, supplies, and equipment listed on pages and 2 of the<br />

<strong>Program</strong> Leader’s Guide, you will need the following:<br />

Appendix J: GAME PLAN Food and Activity Tracker (one copy per participant)<br />

Appendix K: Weekly Pledge form (one copy per participant)<br />

More Than 50 Ways <strong>to</strong> <strong>Prevent</strong> <strong>Diabetes</strong> campaign materials (see information for ordering or<br />

downloading in the following section)<br />

Stickers for participants Individual Progress Charts (stars, smiling faces, and supporting hand, or<br />

other sticker of your choice)<br />

Advance Preparation<br />

In addition <strong>to</strong> the general advance preparation described in the <strong>Program</strong> Leader’s<br />

Resource Guide, you will need <strong>to</strong> do the following:<br />

Pho<strong>to</strong>copy Appendix J: GAME PLAN Food and Activity Tracker and Appendix K: Weekly<br />

Pledge form (one copy for each participant).<br />

Obtain More Than 50 Ways <strong>to</strong> <strong>Prevent</strong> <strong>Diabetes</strong> campaign materials. Download and print from<br />

the NDEP Web site www.ndep.nih.gov, print from the <strong>Power</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Prevent</strong> CD-ROM accompanying<br />

this curriculum, or order using the NDEP Publications Order Form in Appendix AC. If ordering,<br />

allow 6 weeks for delivery.<br />

Place More Than 50 Ways <strong>to</strong> <strong>Prevent</strong> <strong>Diabetes</strong> campaign materials (posters, tip sheets) around<br />

the room.<br />

Write the learning objectives for the session on a fipchart, blackboard, or large piece of paper<br />

taped <strong>to</strong> the meeting room wall for reference later in the session.<br />

Review Appendix G: Troubleshooting for <strong>Program</strong> Leaders <strong>to</strong> prepare for possible interruptions<br />

or challenges in conducting the session.<br />
