Say: “Who can share some tips on preventing diabetes?”<br />

List answers on a fipchart, and make sure that the following items are mentioned:<br />

Involve the whole family in fun daily physical activities such as walking, dancing, basketball,<br />

skating, hiking, swimming, soccer, tennis, and volleyball.<br />

Involve all family members in preparing healthful meals and snacks.<br />

Eat foods that are lower in fat and higher in fber.<br />

Lose weight if you are overweight, or maintain your weight if you are at a healthy body weight.<br />

Say: “Who can share some tips on controlling diabetes?”<br />

List answers on a fipchart, and make sure that the following items are mentioned:<br />

If you have diabetes, keep your blood glucose (sugar) levels as close <strong>to</strong> normal as possible. (This<br />

point is discussed in more detail in Session 6: <strong>Diabetes</strong> Overview, Part 2—Learn Your ABCs.)<br />

Take medications as prescribed by your health care provider.<br />

Check your blood glucose (sugar) values as advised by your health care provider.<br />

Healthy eating and physical activity can help keep diabetes under control.<br />

Activity<br />

Take a 5- <strong>to</strong> 0-minute break for physical activity (e.g., walk around the building, down<br />

the hall and back, or in a circle in the room). Try <strong>to</strong> move <strong>to</strong> music, if available.<br />

Review of Discussion Points<br />

Say: “Today we learned a lot of facts about diabetes. Let’s take something that we learned and make a<br />

pledge about food or activity that we can keep during the coming week.”<br />
