Preparing for the Session<br />
Learning Objectives<br />
At the end of this session, participants will be able <strong>to</strong>:<br />
Recognize negative feelings and stress<br />
Cope with feelings and stress in a positive way, especially by involving others<br />
Change negative thoughts in<strong>to</strong> positive thoughts<br />

In addition <strong>to</strong> the general materials, supplies, and equipment listed on pages and 2 of the<br />
<strong>Program</strong> Leaders Guide, you will need the following:<br />
Appendix J: GAME PLAN Food and Activity Tracker (one copy per participant)<br />
Appendix K: Weekly Pledge form (one copy per participant)<br />
Pre– and Post–Session Questionnaires found in Appendix M (one copy per participant plus a<br />
few extras)<br />
Appendix Y and Z (handouts <strong>to</strong> take home <strong>to</strong> read after session)<br />
NOTE: Before administering the pre- and post-session questionnaires, check with your sponsoring organization<br />
regarding its guidelines on data collection. Your organization or its funding agencies may require clearance of this<br />
data collection and may have special processes for approval.<br />
Appendix X: Coping with Bad Feelings (one copy per participant)<br />
Appendix Y: Stress (one copy per participant)<br />
Appendix Z: Talk Back <strong>to</strong> Negative Thoughts (one copy per participant)<br />
Sign-up sheet for participants <strong>to</strong> volunteer <strong>to</strong> bring food and other items <strong>to</strong> the celebration party<br />
at the fnal session.<br />
OPTIONAL: If your group has teens with diabetes or families of teens with diabetes, consider<br />
ordering or downloading and pho<strong>to</strong>copying the NDEP publication Dealing with the Ups and<br />
Downs of <strong>Diabetes</strong>, which specifcally targets teens with type 2 diabetes. You may want <strong>to</strong> use this<br />
publication even if your group does not have many teens or their families. The tips are important<br />
for people of all ages! Tips for Helping a Person with <strong>Diabetes</strong> is another NDEP publication that<br />
provides practical tips and suggestions for helping loved ones with diabetes. Both publications<br />
can be ordered by calling the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Diabetes</strong> <strong>Education</strong> <strong>Program</strong> at -800-438-5383, or they<br />
can be downloaded from www.ndep.nih.gov and pho<strong>to</strong>copied.<br />
