My Pyramid<br />

Some people in your group may have heard of the My Pyramid plan for choosing foods.<br />

Remind them that the My Pyramid plan is set up <strong>to</strong> help people maintain their current weight,<br />

not <strong>to</strong> lose weight. Weight loss by eating less fat/fewer calories and increased physical activity<br />

was what worked in the <strong>Diabetes</strong> <strong>Prevent</strong>ion <strong>Program</strong>, and is the goal of <strong>Power</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Prevent</strong>.<br />

Remember that people with diabetes should work with a diabetes educa<strong>to</strong>r, a registered dietitian, or<br />

a nutritionist <strong>to</strong> develop an individualized meal plan. If you have diabetes visit one of these health<br />

care providers <strong>to</strong> ask specifc questions and <strong>to</strong> get personal advice.”<br />

Discuss portion control with the group.<br />

Say: “Has anyone noticed how the food portions in restaurants, and especially at fast food restaurants,<br />

have gotten larger over the years? Many people have ‘super-sized’ themselves in<strong>to</strong> larger waistlines<br />

and more body weight. We’re going <strong>to</strong> play a game now <strong>to</strong> show you how portion sizes have changed<br />

over the years. We’ll also see the amount of physical activity that it takes <strong>to</strong> burn off the extra calories<br />

provided by <strong>to</strong>day’s portions.”<br />

Hand out copies of the Portion Dis<strong>to</strong>rtion quiz. Keep the answers <strong>to</strong> hand out after the group plays<br />

the Portion Dis<strong>to</strong>rtion quiz game. Or, if you are using an overhead projec<strong>to</strong>r, use transparencies <strong>to</strong><br />

display each question and each answer in turn.<br />

Determine whether you have time <strong>to</strong> give one or both of the quizzes. Each quiz takes about 0<br />

minutes. Move through each question, and ask the group <strong>to</strong> come up with an answer. Show the<br />

answer and discuss.<br />

Activity<br />

Take a 5- <strong>to</strong> 0-minute break for physical activity (e.g., walk around the building, down<br />

the hall and back, or in a circle in the room). Try <strong>to</strong> move <strong>to</strong> music, if available.<br />

Restroom Break<br />

Allow 5 <strong>to</strong> 0 minutes for participants <strong>to</strong> use the restroom, if needed.<br />

Review of Discussion Points<br />

Say: “Today we learned about two main <strong>to</strong>pics: the difference between ‘portion’ and ‘serving,’ and the Plate<br />

Method of getting more vegetables in<strong>to</strong> your diet. Let’s take something that we learned and make a<br />

pledge about food or activity that we can keep from now until the next session.<br />
