Since your parturefrom this I'm told y*probably Collector Beathune will take the house and yeards of Blackness. And since he's now at Ed 1'I intreat you'l take the opportunity of speaking to him or some body else who has influence w* him.I'm of y e opinion he may give fyfteen lib sterling for y e house, gardyne, tree yeard, and grass in y eavenue and among y e planting, but doe in it as you can, only I wish you could bring Mm y° lenth oftaking a tack and then (I need not tell you) to cautione y e preserving y e planting, Allowing y e pictursto stay at Blackness and upholding y e glass windows but verbum sapienti sat est. Al Wedderburne.(This letter is in good condition and is sealed, as are most of the clerk's letters, with a small sealbearing the Wedderburn arms, charged with a crescent for cadency. In tins instance the wax usedis black, but generally it is red. A simdar address is on almost all the letters. A facsimile of thisone is given opposite.)7. 1710. Feb. 14.—Letter from same to same.In this letter the writer says, " I forgott to tell you at last pait ting that it was M r James Martine'sopinion and myne that the day of the auction of Blackness' Books aud the roup of his householdfurniture and plenishing should be published by the Currant ; as also that you will be at the troubleto call at Robert Crammond for Blackness Books, and send them with Crockat.•I wish your fathermay consider well of his action for the children's ace' ; for my own pairt I am readie to answer hisdemands, but his proving the tenor till onee the exhibition be done is what I will not agree to for reasonsknown to yourself for I am als much for the youngest as for the EldestI have also sent thebelt aud buckle which are charged at one pound fifteen shillings Sterling, and the sword at four poundten shillings." Various other details are alluded to, amongst them a wish that " something be doneimmediately against John Pilmor" (ante No. 3 and post Nos. 10 and 19).(Tins letter is signed by the clerk, but is not written, except as to one small part, by him.)8. 1710. Feb. 22.—Letter same to same, dated from " Brichen."In this the clerk acknowledges receiving, while taking journey on his collection for excise, a letterfrom George Seton, and proceeds to give his view as to realizing various parts of the late Sir Alexander'sestate, including his " part of Mr. Jaffray's ship." He objects strongly to a proposedchange of day for the roup, as he has " told severals of it who desigue to be at Dundie for thepurpose and the Inventars (catalogues) are very much longed for by severals." He suggests thatSeton be " trying for a merchant (i.e., purchaser) for the chair," and is " clear that the diamond crossshould be sold. Perhaps Pitcur might be inclined for it, and in the meantime you may try the valueof it at such as have skill. This with my service to your Lady and children is from, Sir, your mosthumble serv 1 ,Al. Wedderburne."9. 1710. Feb. 22.—Letter same to same, dated from Brechin.This is by way of postscript to the foregoing letter. In it the clerk " thinks it " absolutelynecessary that the lands of Omachie and the lodging in Dundie be disposed of and suggests " thatit can be done without convening the creditors." He says he has " told you that the miln isrenounced already and we be obliged to keep it in our hand or give something down of (f) the Rental!.The Judiciall Inveutar will be ready to goe w* Crockat on Monday seven night." (See post No. 12.)10. 1710. March 6.—Letter same to same.After mentioning the sale of part of the ship (see ante No. 8), he says " I'm well pleased thatthe Diamond Cross be sold and the chair with the satine in Blackness' Chamber As for thesilk stockings you mention, they look as if they had been used I am surprised at Mrs.Ogston's ace 1 for Books, and if way be given to all these accounts I think £1000 sterling will not paythem, which will alter all our measures I desire to know wdiat your father is designed to doeanent the children, and I wish it were resolved to pursue John Pilmor and Mrs. Patillo for Blackness'slinnens, for it's unaccountable they should slip. The reasone I mentione Mrs. Patillo is because shewas contemporary servant w' John Pilmer, and probably might be judged the keeper of them."The letter also refers to two mares which the clerk had sent to Mr. Lassaget and Deacon Kerr,apparently in part payment of their accounts, but about which difficulties seem to have arisen. Healso wishes that the inveutar of the Books had been printed, and hopes G. Seton will be present atthe roup of the furniture which is to begin on the 20th inst., and which is calculated to last eightdays. He encloses £52 scots for paying the demands at the Bill Chamber, and wants an accountmade of what was due to Sir Alexander at his death.(This letter is whole, but much mildewed. It has the usual seal of arms in black wax).1This and the following letters are docketed with the date only. They are numbered 2 or 4 on theback, these numbers being evidently the post mark. Except where otherwise noted, they aredated from " Dundie," begin " Sir," aud end " Your most humble servant," &c.
