BURGH RECORDS—DUNDEE. 20115. 1547. (no date).— James Wedderburn, dean of Gild. The"LockitThis is, no doubt, the sou of Robert Wedderburn and Janet Foster (ante No. 1), as his namesake Bulk 'ofthe son of James Wedderburn and Jauet Barry (ante No. 3) had at this date fled from Scotland and Dundee, was living in Dieppe.16. 1552.1(no date).—Joannes Wedderburn, films Jacobi Wedderburn, j unions, fratergildse. This John Wedderburn, son of James Wedderburn, junior, and Janet Forrester, is the personsupposed by Mr. Millar to have been clerk of Dundee. I doubt if the date here given for hisadmission is correct, as in the third volume of the ''Burgh and Head Court Records" (see post.b. v.), there is an eutry dated 26 Feb. 1551, recordiug that Johu, son of the late James Wedderburn, then took the oath of fidelity and was ordained to be entered in the " Lockit Buik."17. 1554. Nov. 15.— Gulielmus Wedderburn, filius Davidis Wedderburn, frater gildse.William, son of David Wedderbu.-n in Murraygait and Helen Lawson. He was their Second sonand it is curious that he should have been admitted before his elder brother, James, who seems notto have got his freedom till 1560. (See post, No. 20).18. 1555. Nov. 15.—Alexander Wedderburn, Roberti Wedderburn filius, frater gildse.Alexander, son to Robert Wedderburn and Janet Kyd. See ante, No. 1.20. 1560. Oct. 11.—Jacobus Wedderburn, frater gildse ratione paternal libertatis.James Wedderburn of Craigie, eldest son of David Wedderburn and Helen Lawson. See ante, No.17.21. 1568. Oct. 22.—Thomas Wedderburn, Gilberti Wedderburn filius, frater gildfe.Son of Gilbert, whose admission is already given. See ante No. 14.22. 1570. Dec. 21.—David Wedderburn, magistri Eoberti Wedderburn filius, fratergildse. The elder of the two natural, but legitimatized, sons of Robert Wedderburn, the Vicar, byIsobell Lovell. The fact that both he and his brother (post No. 25) are both admitted withoutreference to any liberty of their father, goes to show that the Vicar never was admitted a burgessand that the entry above given (No. 12) does not refer to him. This David d. unm. 1583-85.23. 1570-71. Eeb. 7.— Patricius Wedderburn, Alexandri Wedderburn filius, frater gildse.Second son to Alexander Wedderburn, elder (ante No. 8), and Isobeil Audersou. His elder brother,Richard Wedderburn, burgess in Elsiguor, never got himself admitted to the freedom of Duudee.24. 1572. July 16.— Robertus Wedderburn, Roberti Wedderburn junioris filius, fratergildse.Only son of Robert Wedderburn and Elspeth Scrymgeour, and grandson of James Wedderburnand Janet Logan. (See ante, Nos. 1, 3 and 12.)25. 1580. Dec. 14.—Robertus Wedderburn, frater gildse. This is Robert Wedderburn the merchant, natural but legitimatised son of Robert, the Vicar.26. 1582. May 8.—Eodem die Magister Alexander Wedderburn effectus est burgensis etfrater gildse ratione privilegii Alexandri Wedderburn, scribse, dicti burgi sui patris. 2Alexander Wedderburn, afterwards first of Kingennie and clerk of Dundee, son of AlexanderWedderburn, then clerk, and Janet Myln. Born 1561. Died 1626.Mr. Millar gets into considerable confusion over this entry, which he supposes to refer to AlexanderWedderburn, second of Kingennie, who was not born till after its date, instead of, as the fact is, tohis father. He appends to it a long note, accepting with little correction, Douglas' accountof Kingennie' s predecessors, by which John Wedderburn, " of Tofts," said to have died in 1533,is made town clerk of Duudee, and father to David Wedderburn, who married Helen Lawson. This David, in his turn, is said to have died in 1590, and to have been the father of Kingennie, all mention being omitted (as Mr. Millar observes) of Alexander Wedderburn, the old clerk, who1Mr. Millar also gives the admission in 1550 of Finlay Duncan, surgeon, and in a note speaks ofWilliam Duncan who married " Katharine Wedderburn, sister to the famous Sir (sic) AlexanderWedderburn, first Baron of Kingennie." This is an error, as Kingennie was never knighted.- The admissions 1582-1637 are almost all in this form, which may be translated, " On the said day(the person named) was made burgess and brother of the gild by reason of the privilege of (su.-hand such a person)." Sometimes the words "accidentibus gratis" or " solutis " are added, showing whether he got his freedom for nothing or by payment.2c
