Letter made to James <strong>Wedderburn</strong>e, burgess<strong>of</strong> Dundee, constituting him clerk <strong>of</strong> our sovereign lord's Cocquet <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said burgh<strong>of</strong> Dundee and searcher <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same within all <strong>the</strong> bounds, ifec, <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>, during hisHighness pleasure, granting to <strong>the</strong> said James and his deputes (whom his Highnessgives him power to substitute under him in <strong>the</strong> same <strong>of</strong>fice for <strong>the</strong> better exercising<strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>) power to search for all " custumabile guidis passand furth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> realme fra<strong>the</strong> boundis foirsaidis uncustumat and siclike all victuall, flesche, talloun, gold, siluer,and u<strong>the</strong>ris," &c, and also to have <strong>the</strong> keeping <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said Cocquet seal, (xlii, 126.)24. 1590. James <strong>the</strong> Greater, situated in <strong>the</strong> parish church<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> burgh <strong>of</strong> Dundee, also with consent <strong>of</strong> James Scrymgeour <strong>of</strong> Dudope, Provost<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Constabulary <strong>of</strong> Dundee, undoubted patron <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said chapel <strong>of</strong> S. Gift to John Lindsay, fourth lawful son to <strong>the</strong> lateRobert Lindsay <strong>of</strong> Balhall, and to Katharine Lindsay, daughter <strong>of</strong> said Robert,equally betwixt <strong>the</strong>m, and <strong>the</strong>ir heirs, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> escheat goods, &c, which pertained toJohn <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, burgess <strong>of</strong> Dundee, and which he shall happen to acquire duringhis rebellion, now in <strong>the</strong> King's hands, through <strong>the</strong> said John <strong>Wedderburn</strong> being putto <strong>the</strong> home by virtue <strong>of</strong> letters raised, for not finding <strong>of</strong> <strong>ca</strong>ution to have compeiredbefore <strong>the</strong> justices, &c, on a certain day by past to answer to <strong>the</strong> charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>slaughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Robert Lindsay <strong>of</strong> Balhall on <strong>the</strong> 19 July last by past, or asrebell denounced at <strong>the</strong> instance <strong>of</strong> Campbell, relict <strong>of</strong> James Leitch, Irelandman,his bairns, kin, and friends for non compeirance to answer for <strong>the</strong> slaughter <strong>of</strong>said James Leitch. Gift to Mr. Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, common clerk<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> burgh <strong>of</strong> Dundee, his heirs, &c, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> escheat goods, &c, which pertainedbefore to James Sci-ymgeour, burgess <strong>of</strong> Dundee, and now in <strong>the</strong> King's hands through<strong>the</strong> said James being put to <strong>the</strong> home, by virtue <strong>of</strong> letters raised at <strong>the</strong> instance <strong>of</strong>William Curving, Englishman, or at <strong>the</strong> instance <strong>of</strong> James Barroun, merchant, burgess<strong>of</strong> Edinburgh, or ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, for non-payment <strong>of</strong> certain sums <strong>of</strong> money, (lxix, 130.)27. 1600. 26 May.—At Holyroodhouse.
