Letter from James Cummyng, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lyon Office, Edinburgh, to <strong>the</strong> Heralds' College, London. 1Sir,—Immediately on receipt <strong>of</strong> your letter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 17th, I made an exact survey <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> monumentalinscriptions in Gray Friars church yard here (Edinburgh) and found but one relating to <strong>the</strong> family <strong>of</strong><strong>Wedderburn</strong>, in <strong>the</strong> inclosed part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> burying ground on <strong>the</strong> south side where <strong>the</strong>re is a long inscriptionin English cut in small letters on a white stone, but so much defaced on account <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> badness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>stone as to be almost illegible 2 ; <strong>the</strong> first four lines are larger, and though much obscured appear to be asfollows :Here lies interredAlexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, Esquire,Younger son <strong>of</strong> Sir Peter <strong>Wedderburn</strong><strong>of</strong> Gosford, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Senators <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Colledge <strong>of</strong> Justice ...In <strong>the</strong> churchyard <strong>of</strong> Dundee <strong>the</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> following monumental Inscription over <strong>the</strong> burial place <strong>of</strong>Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong> <strong>of</strong> Easter Powrie, <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r's son <strong>of</strong> James <strong>Wedderburn</strong> <strong>of</strong> Blackness, Esq.,mentioned in <strong>the</strong> Birth-brief." Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, Dominus de Blackness, Civitatis Taodunanae secretariusdignissimus, qui obiit 18 Nov. 1676, aetat suae 66."Also <strong>the</strong> following " Elizabetha <strong>Wedderburn</strong>a ex antiqua Wedderburuorum familia oriundaRoberto Moravio marito sibique in memoriam ponebat quae post aliquos annos virum secuta obiitMors sola fateturQuantula sunt hominum corpuscula."<strong>The</strong>re is in <strong>the</strong> churchyard at Coupar in Fife an inscription over <strong>the</strong> bodies <strong>of</strong> James <strong>Wedderburn</strong>e,minister <strong>of</strong> Moonsie, and William his son. 3<strong>The</strong>re is no record <strong>of</strong> any escutcheon used at <strong>the</strong> funerals <strong>of</strong> any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> persons mentioned in yours,but I have compiled from sundry evidents <strong>the</strong> enclosed birth-brief or pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> gentility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> twogentlemen you mention, from which <strong>the</strong> sixteen branches <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> funeral escutcheons as exhibited in thiscountry are taken. <strong>The</strong> Escutcheons <strong>of</strong> Sir Peter <strong>Wedderburn</strong> <strong>of</strong> Gosford and <strong>of</strong> Peter his grandson,who was a Lord <strong>of</strong> Session, if you think it necessary, shall likewise be made out but as you are desirous tohave a return soon I send what is ready and shall wait your fur<strong>the</strong>r orders. I am sir, your most ob'humble servant,John Cummyng.With <strong>the</strong>se papers is placed ano<strong>the</strong>r pedigree, apparently a draft <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> recorded one opposite, thoughit differs from it by reason <strong>of</strong> some additions, and one or two errors, viz., " Kennington " for" Kensington," and " Henrietta, Maria " for " Henrietta Maria."
