PUBLIC RECORDS—SCOTLAND. 389There is among the Privy Council papers, a printed list of the " Persons Iutereonimuned and Privydeclared Fugitives, since the year 1674, for not compearing before the Council, or Commissions of CouncilCouncil, to answer for Conventicles, &c, Whose names are to be affixt by Sheriffs and other Magis- Register, trates upon the publiot places of Judicature, that they may not have the benetite of the Law in anyProcess ; and who are to be seized upon and secured until they submit themselves to the laws, andbe relaxed from the Horn." Follows the names of such as are denounced and Intereommuned. Ministers Iutereonimunedare, (among many others) :—Mr James Wedderburn,"The Persons underwritten, for the most part are residents in Fife, and are denounced, but notIntereommuned, viz.. (among many :— others) Mr. James Wedderburn in Couper."From this list it would seem that there were two ministers of the same name, both living in 1674.If so, they must be J;mies Wedderburn, minister of Moouzie, and his son James, who was admitted hiscolleague in 1659. James Wedderburn, elder, however, is said (Fast. Eccl. Scot., II., 505) to havedied in 1661, and. although no authority is quoted for this date, he would certainly have been ofconsiderable age in 1674, as he took his degree at S. Andrew's in 1608. Possibly the compiler of thelist overlooked the fact of his death, or erroneously placed his son (who died at Cupar 23 July 1687)in both its divisions : or, perhaps, the Christian name of the first mentioned minister should beAlexander or Andrew, as Mr. James Wedderburn in Cupar had two such brothers, both ministers,of whom the latter was certainly in difficulties with the Government at about this time. (See anteNos. 63-65, 68.) It may be well to explain that persons "denounced" were declared to be rebels, while, as appears from the above extract (No. 67), everyone was prohibited, under severe penalties, from holding any intercourse with those " intereommuned."68. 1684. Jan. 23.—Petition by Helen Turnbull, relict of Mr. Alexander Wedderbuine, late minister at Kilmarnock. (Vol. 1082-85, fol. 221.)The Petition shows that the Petitioner's husband died in November 1678, and left thePetitioner with the burden of " many young children with little or no provision," and that thePetitioner having applied to the Council in October 1680 for the stipend of that crop of the parishof Kilmarnock wdiich was then vacant, the Lords declared they would allow the same to her for thatyear, or the equivalent thereof from the vacant stipends (the Archbishop of Glasgow being firstsatisfied of the sum of £300 sterling ordained to be paid to him out of the vacancies of his Diocese),and seeing the Petitioner did not receive the vacant stipend of Kilmarnock for that year, which thesaid Archbishop applied to other uses by virtue of the Council's Order ; therefore craves that theCouncil, from commiseration of her own and her fatherless children's condition, would allow themthe vacant stipend of the parish of Dunlap for the year 1683 : which petition the Council grant, inplace of the half year's stipend of Kilmarnock.69. 1685. Sept. 11.— The Lords of Privy Council, understanding that the troop ofHorse under the command of Major John Wedderburnc of Gosfoord are convenientlyposted for His Majesty's service in the town and shire of Lanark, do allow the saidMajor John Wedderburne to continue them quartered there until further order.(Vol. 1685, fol. 160.)70. 1686. Jane 3.— At Edinburgh. His Majestie's High Commissioner and the Lords ofHis Privy Council in pursuance of His Majestie's Commands, dated at his Court atWhitehall the twentieth second day of May last by-past, hereby Recommend toGeneral Lievtemiant Drummond to remove from His Majestie's Service John AVedderburneof Gosfoord as Lievtemiant Collonell of His Majestie's Regiment of Dragoones, commanded by Lord Charles Murrry as Collonell, and to signify His Majestie'spleasure therein, and to see the same punctually performed and that in pursuance ofHis Majestie's Letter aforesaid.
