He wasadmitted a notary in 1609 and later on (1617) be<strong>ca</strong>me conjunct clerk with his fa<strong>the</strong>r, at whose deathin 1626 he be<strong>ca</strong>me sole clerk till his own early death in 1627.On <strong>the</strong> first leaf is written, " This buike pertenis me, M. J. <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, July 1609." " MasterJames <strong>Wedderburn</strong> vith my hand," and in Latin, " <strong>The</strong> Kook <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> protocols <strong>of</strong> Mr. James <strong>Wedderburn</strong>,son lawful <strong>of</strong> Mr. Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, clerk <strong>of</strong> Dundee, in <strong>the</strong> year <strong>of</strong> man's salvation 1609."<strong>The</strong>n follows <strong>the</strong> epitaph <strong>of</strong> Mary Queen <strong>of</strong> Scots, in Latin and Scotch, as at <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> Vols.253 and 264. It is repeated on <strong>the</strong> second leaf.414. 1609. June 20. --At Edinburgh. " <strong>The</strong> quhilk day in presens <strong>of</strong> Mr. Jhone Prestoun<strong>of</strong> Pennecuik, &c, compeirit personallie Mr. James <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, lawfull sone to MrAlex 1 <strong>Wedderburn</strong>e, common clerk <strong>of</strong> Dundie, being <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> twenty yeires or'thairby and producit <strong>the</strong> Lettre under writtene subscrivit be <strong>the</strong> Kingis Majesties<strong>ca</strong>shar quhair <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tenour followis &c." <strong>The</strong> letter is in <strong>the</strong> usual form, and recitesthat Mr. James, "since his cumming from <strong>the</strong> scoles hes bene trainit up with hisfa<strong>the</strong>r in exerceing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said <strong>of</strong>fice, quhilk hes movit <strong>the</strong> provost baillies and counsall<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said brught (burgh) to give thair consentis to admitt him to <strong>the</strong> said <strong>of</strong>fice, &c."and finally, he is admitted notary, and appends his notarial docket, signature, andsymbol. Nov. 6.—James Kynnaird, burgess, and Elizabeth <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, his wife,resign lands near S. Clements to Andrew Kynnaird. (6.)416. 1616. May 18.—Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong>. merchant, burgess (son <strong>of</strong> Patrick <strong>Wedderburn</strong>,also merchant burgess), and Barbara Auchinlek, his wife, by her attorney,produce a charter in <strong>the</strong>ir favour by <strong>the</strong> said Patrick and Elizabeth Low, his wife, <strong>of</strong>certain acres in <strong>the</strong> East-field <strong>of</strong> Dudop. (34.)417. 1617. Oct. 27.— Mr. William Fergussone, in implement <strong>of</strong> a contract <strong>of</strong> marriagebetween William Fergussone, his son and heir apparent, and Helen Dun<strong>ca</strong>n, eldestdaughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late William Dun<strong>ca</strong>n, surgeon, and Catharine <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, formerlyhis wife, now <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said Mr. William Fergussone. settles on <strong>the</strong> spouses <strong>the</strong>lands <strong>of</strong> Balbeuchlie, with tower, fortalice, manor-place, &c, subject to his own andhis wife's life-rent. Mr. Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, clerk, and his sous, Alexander,Peter, and John <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, are witnesses. (35.)418. 1617. Oct. 27.—Mr. William Fergussone also charges Balbeuchlie with an @-rent infavour <strong>of</strong> Magdalen Fergussone, his daughter, by his wife, Catharine <strong>Wedderburn</strong>.
