:BURGH RECORDS—DUNDEE. 199the statement that they are admitted by reason of their fathers' freedom shows that The "Lockitalready, at the beginning of the sixteenth century, the family had long been established S uik ofrtin Dundee. The age for admission seems to have been about 20 or 21. Of course, manypersons were admitted later in life, in recognition of their position, but they were seldomadmitted earlier. Taking the persons whose birth dates are clear from other evidence, wefind Alexander, first of Kiugennie, admitted at the age of 21, and his brother David in thesame year, probably at 20. James, the clerk (d. 1627), and his son, Sir Alexander, wereboth 21, and Sir John Wedderburn, first Baronet of Blackness, was 24. On the otherhand, Alexander, third of Kingennie, was 17, and John Wedderburn of Gosford, whoseems to have been wonderfully old for his years, was only 14. James, Bishop ofDunblane, was 38 ; Robert, the notary, 41 ; and David, Master of the Aberdeen GrammarSchool, 52. Not much, therefore, can be argued as to the age of a given individual fromthe mere date of his admission as burgess.Extracts from the " Lockit Buik." 1]. 1514. Jacobus Wedderburn, junior, frater gildse ratione libertatis paternse. This James Wedderburn ia either the eldest sou of James Wedderburn aud Janet Barry, or theson of Robert Wedderburn and Janet Froster. It is not clear which of the two were called " junior "at this date, as compared not with each other but with the father of the former. Mr. Millar makesno doubt that this is the son of James, but I incline to think it is the sou of Robert, who wasprobably a little older than James' son, and would thus be admitted burgess before him. Lateron, after the death of old James Wedderburn, the son of Robert was called elder, and thementions of James Wedderburn, junior, then refer, no doubt to the son of James, who married JanetForrester. See post No. 3.Mr. Millar's error in calling this entry " the earliest appearance of the name of Wedderburn in theexisting Burgh records " has already been noted. (Ante p. 188 n.) He is also in error in stating thatJohn Wedderburn, the sou of James Wedderburn and Janet Forrester was "the first of a succession1The ancient rent roll mentioned above is headed "The Book of ye eomoun Rentallis of the Burgh ofBundle, Almishous aud Kirkwark thairof ; This maid and dewys it in the tyme of Mr. James Haliburton,Provost ;Alexander Scrymgeoure, William forrester, James fiudlausoune, and Alexander Ramesay, Bailliesof ye said Burgh."It seems to have been made up in 1582 and is divided into three sections (i.) The Thesauran's Chairge.(ii.) The Kirkmaisteris Chairge.
