—1567—THE PROTOCOL BOOKS.DundeeProtocolBooks.This record begins in 1518 and continues, with but one important break, due to <strong>the</strong>loss <strong>of</strong> a volume, down to date. It has been searched through sixty-nine large volumesfrom 1518 to 1801. <strong>The</strong> volumes are numbered consecutively 235—303, and in additionto <strong>the</strong>se <strong>the</strong>re are three unnumbered volumes, and nineteen small minute <strong>book</strong>s.<strong>The</strong>re is among some loose papers in <strong>the</strong> Dundee charter room an old Inventory(1659), <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>n existing protocol <strong>book</strong>s, made and written by Sir Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong><strong>of</strong> Blackness, who was clerk from 1633 to 1675. It is as follows :" <strong>The</strong> Inventorie <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Prothogolles in <strong>the</strong> presse belonging to me,which wes taken up this 3 ld <strong>of</strong> March, 1659.Three ancient prothogolles <strong>of</strong> Thomas Ireland, which beginues anno 1518 and ends in anno 1567.Three ancient prothogolles <strong>of</strong> Halbert Glaidstanea, which beginnes anno 1552 and ends in anno 1567.One <strong>of</strong> Alexander Maxwells, which he beginnes anno 1555 and ends in 1574.Sex prothogoll bonkes <strong>of</strong> Robert <strong>Wedderburn</strong>e, which beginnes anno 1574 and ends anno 1606.Thair ar 12 Minutt <strong>book</strong>s <strong>of</strong> his.Thair are 15 Prothogolles <strong>of</strong> Mr. Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong>e, my goodschyr, which beginnes 1583 audiends in anno 1624.Thair are7 Minutt <strong>book</strong>es.Ane prothogoll <strong>of</strong> Mr. James <strong>Wedderburn</strong>e, my fa<strong>the</strong>r, which beginnes anno 160'J and ends anno 1622.Ane prothogoll <strong>of</strong> Mr. Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, my uucle, which beginnes anno 1627 and ends anno 1 632.Ane prothogoll <strong>of</strong> Thomas Kessie, which beginnes anno 1616 and ends anno 1641.Ane <strong>of</strong> Thomas Wightone, which beginnes anno 1648 and ends anno 1653.Ane <strong>of</strong> my owne which beginnes anno 1633 and ends anno 1639.Ane o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> myne which lyes in my chamber, which beginnes anno 1639, and is not perfyted."<strong>The</strong> above account includes most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dundee Protocol Books and Minutes <strong>of</strong>Sasines still extant and covering <strong>the</strong> period from 1518 to 1659. <strong>The</strong>n follow No. 274(1659 — 1666), a. volume <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> Sir Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, but not his ; Nos. 275,276, and 277 (1666— 1690), <strong>the</strong> <strong>book</strong>s <strong>of</strong> .lames <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, his son, who was admittedconjunct clerk with him in 1671, and was sole clerk 1675—96 ; No. 278 (1690—1699),<strong>the</strong> <strong>book</strong> partly <strong>of</strong> .lames <strong>Wedderburn</strong> and partly <strong>of</strong> his son Alexander, who was sole clerk1696—1715, and No. 279, which covers <strong>the</strong> latter part <strong>of</strong> this period (1699—1715). In1716 Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong> was demitted from <strong>the</strong> clerkship for his share in <strong>the</strong> rising<strong>of</strong> 1715, and <strong>the</strong>reafter <strong>the</strong> protocols <strong>of</strong> Dundee are in <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong> his successors, nolonger <strong>of</strong> his name. <strong>The</strong>y run without a break from 1717 to <strong>the</strong> present time. Of <strong>the</strong>sevolumes Nos. 280-289 have been searched throughout (1717—1767), and Nos. 290-30Shave been examined by <strong>the</strong> indices only (1767— 1801).We <strong>ca</strong>n now sum up <strong>the</strong> position <strong>of</strong> this record ; marking with a * those volumeswhich are missing, with a f those which are extant but are not named in Sir Alexander'slist, while those which have been left unnumbered in <strong>the</strong> arrangement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> DundeeCharter room, are indi<strong>ca</strong>ted by a — instead <strong>of</strong> a number.No. Date.
