4. Supplementation Technical Work Group (STWG):During FY 1987, the STWG was formed in accordance with Sections206(b)(l) <strong>and</strong> (2) of the Program. The STWG has developed aFive-Year Research Work Plan addressing stock selection, time ofrelease, <strong>and</strong> other factors affecting the success ofsupplementation activities. The Five-Year Work Plan was submittedto the Council in June 1988. The Council approved the Plan inSeptember 1988 with the provision that they approve all projectsin advance of implementation.The STWG identified six research projects during FY 1989 thataddressed the research needs identified in the Work Plan. Threeof these projects were developed in sufficient detail for approval<strong>and</strong> procurement activities to begin. The following three projectswere implemented in FY 1989:1. Project 89-96, A Genetic Monitoring <strong>and</strong> Evaluation Programfor Supplemented Populations of Salmon <strong>and</strong> Steelhead in theUpper Columbia River Basin.2. Project 89-97, Evaluation of the Success of SupplementingImnaha River Summer Steelhead with Hatchery Reared Smolts <strong>and</strong>Assessment of the Effect on Natural Production Performance,Life History Characteristics, <strong>and</strong> Genetic Characteristics.3. Project 89-98, Determination of Effectiveness ofSupplementation Strategies <strong>and</strong> Assessment of InteractionBetween Supplemental Hatchery Chinook Salmon <strong>and</strong> NaturalPopulations in the Salmon, Snake, <strong>and</strong> Clearwater Rivers inIdaho.The STWG identified five projects for possible implementation inFY 1990. Additional review by the STWG reduced the number ofprojects for possible implementation in FY 1990 to three. Theseprojects will need further development <strong>and</strong> refinement prior tosubmittal for approval <strong>and</strong> procurement. This activity will takeplace through September 1990. The STWG did not identifyadditional projects for implementation in FY 1991.Plans:BPA will continue to fund the TWGs as long as the Program containsa Measure calling for BPA funding.1 2 3
