Council-approved mitigationplans <strong>and</strong> priorities for Hungry Horse Dam are listed in Table 4of the 1987 Fish <strong>and</strong> Wildlife Program.Table 4 calls for BPA to undertake projects to enhance winterrange in Northwest Montana to support a target carrying capacityof additional 133 elk. Table 4 also calls for the protection of8,590 acres of riparian habitat for grizzly bears <strong>and</strong> 1 146 acresof wetl<strong>and</strong> habitat, along with determining the feasibility ofprotecting 11,050 acres of old-growth timber for terrestrialfurbearers.ACTION ITEM ACTIVITY SUMMARY:Objectives:To undertake advance design <strong>and</strong> then begin implementation of the<strong>wildlife</strong> mitigation projects at Hungry Horse Dam.Background <strong>and</strong> Progress to Date:Plans:Action Items 8.8 through 8.10 pertain to the advance design <strong>and</strong>implementation of <strong>wildlife</strong> mitigation for Hungry Horse Dam.In FY 1987, BPA initiated advance design for the <strong>wildlife</strong> habitatimprovement <strong>and</strong> protection projects. In FY 1988, BPA continuedadvance design <strong>and</strong> began habitat improvement <strong>and</strong> protectionprojects. In FY 1989 <strong>and</strong> FY 1990, habitat improvement <strong>and</strong> protectionprojects were continued.BPA plans to continue <strong>and</strong> complete activities for the elk/mule deerhabitat enhancement projects <strong>and</strong> the easement/acquisitions (habitatprotection) projects in FY 1991. Future <strong>wildlife</strong> projects for HungryHorse Dam will be funded through the Montana Wildlife MitigationTrust Agreement.2 3 1
