7.147.14 IMPACTS OF DWORSHAK DAM(Begin Assessment of Construction <strong>and</strong> Current Operation Impacts)903(e)(4)BPA shall fund a study to assess the impacts of the originalconstruction <strong>and</strong> current operation of Dworshak Dam on theresident <strong>fish</strong>ery. This study will include the followingresearch concerns of the Nez Perce Tribe: 1) population dynamicsof kokanee; 2) reservoir productivity; 3) food habits of rainbowtrout; 4) population dynamics <strong>and</strong> habitat preferences of smallmouth bass; <strong>and</strong>, 5) the status of forage species. This studyeffort will be coordinated with the Corps. Recommendationsdetailing specific protection, mitigation <strong>and</strong> enhancementopportunities, consistent with the requirements of 804(e)916),may be submitted to the Council.ACTION ITEM ACTIVITY SUMMARY:Objectives:To assess the status of resident <strong>fish</strong> stocks, particularly kokanee;to compare data to that obtained when reservoir was first filled; todetermine whether changes are caused by operation of Dworshak Dam.Background <strong>and</strong> Progress to Date:Plans:Two projects have been funded to cover the five concerns listed inthe Proaram Measure. IDFG <strong>and</strong> the NPT are the contractors for theproject;.The projects started July 1, 1987.The projects will run until December 31 1991, at which time IDFG <strong>and</strong>the NPT may submit recommendations detajling spec ific protection,miti gation, <strong>and</strong> enhancement plans to the Council.2 0 1
