6.26.2RESEARCH IN THE FIVE-YEAR WORK PLANS(Begin to Fund in FY 1988)404703(e)703(h)206(b)[Abstract] These measures address BPA funding of research,development, and testing of improved fish husbandry practices,rearing operations, release strategies, stock assessment, fishhealth protection, indices of smolt quality, and hatcherysupplementation. Measure 206(b) in the Program directs BPA tofocus its funding of salmon and steelhead research in the nextfive years in the four areas of emphasis described under ActionItem 6.1 in BPA's Work Plan. Technical Work Groups in each ofthe areas of emphasis will develop a Five-Year Research WorkPlan for Council approval and BPA funding beginning in FY 1988.ACTION ITEM ACTIVITY SUMMARY:Objectives:The Council Technical Work Group (TWG) process was instituted tofocus research planning in four areas of technical emphasisconsidered fundamental to the success of the Fish and WildlifeProgram. BPA will incorporate the results of the TWG planning intothe annual work planning process and will pursue implementation ofthe research identified and prioritized by the TWGs and approved bythe Council.Background and Progress to Date:Plans:The four TWGs (Reservoir Mortality and Water Budget Effectiveness,Fish Disease, Hatchery Effectiveness, and Supplementation) submittedFive-Year Research Work Plans in 1987 or early 1988 for Councilreview and approval. BPA began funding projects from the Work Plansin late FY 1988.BPA plans to continue funding projects from the TWG Five-Year WorkPlans in FY 1991.1 2 5
