At both locations, plants originating fromfarmer-saved seeds lodged more, possibly due to the effect of fungalinfection that was observed on these seeds and reduced resistance tostresses due to low vigour. The predominant fungus observed wasFusarium moniliforme, which is a seed-borne pathogen and develops asthe seed germinates. It infects the seed and the seedling and continuesto develop in the stem tissues and later appears in the developed cobs.The fungus therefore causes severe lodging and ear rot in maize.Percentage total lodging was very high at Kwadaso, possibly due tohigher relative humidity, which is ideal for the development of fungi,such as F. moniliforme.
