Program Design<br />

The Marketing certificate program is designed for students who are interested<br />

in a career change or who already have a degree <strong>and</strong> are looking for a career<br />

specialty.<br />

Curriculum<br />

Students may enroll full- or part- time. Since some courses are not offered in<br />

both the fall <strong>and</strong> spring semesters, see an advisor about your schedule. Note:<br />

All business courses numbered 100 or higher require students to be eligible<br />

Learning Outcomes<br />

Upon successful completion of all Marketing certificate program requirements,<br />

1. Underst<strong>and</strong> marketing methods <strong>and</strong> institutions, including analysis <strong>and</strong><br />

interrelationship of the marketing mix.<br />

2. Possess computer skills appropriate to the marketing area including<br />

word processing, electronic spreadsheet, Internet browser, database<br />

management, <strong>and</strong> presentation software.<br />

3. Use the Internet for business purposes, including research, marketing,<br />

<strong>and</strong> stock market analysis.<br />

4. Underst<strong>and</strong> market theory <strong>and</strong> its application to product planning, price<br />

determination, government regulation, <strong>and</strong> distribution cost analysis.<br />

5. Demonstrate advertising strategy, tactics <strong>and</strong> techniques, including<br />

media selection, ad preparation, market research methods, <strong>and</strong> program<br />

evaluation.<br />

6. Apply <strong>and</strong> demonstrate the principles, methods <strong>and</strong> techniques of<br />

selling <strong>and</strong> retailing.<br />

7. Underst<strong>and</strong> the interrelationships between marketing <strong>and</strong> all other<br />

areas within a business including working with other departments to<br />

achieve overall strategic goals.<br />

8. Work with others, including culturally <strong>and</strong> intellectually diverse people;<br />

think critically; <strong>and</strong> gain an appreciation for life-long learning.<br />

9. Develop sound ethical <strong>and</strong> moral professional characteristics.<br />

Media Technology, Certificate<br />

Program Design<br />

The Media Technology certificate program provides an intensive exposure to a<br />

range of current communication technologies. It is intended for students who<br />

are technically oriented <strong>and</strong> wish to work in technical positions in the fields<br />

of radio, television, photography, desktop publishing <strong>and</strong> cable television. It<br />

concentrates on teaching skills that are necessary for working behind-thescenes<br />

in media <strong>and</strong> communications. Classes are highly practical <strong>and</strong> provide<br />

significant h<strong>and</strong>s-on opportunity, allowing the student to apply classroom theory<br />

to real-life projects. In developing this certificate program, extensive effort was<br />

made to provide skills that are currently in high dem<strong>and</strong> in the Connecticut<br />

labor market.<br />

Curriculum<br />

The program can be completed in two semesters of rigorous, full-time study,<br />

but will take longer for the student attending part-time.<br />

1. Write copy for radio <strong>and</strong> television.<br />

2. Effectively use the Macintosh computer <strong>and</strong> design-related software.<br />

3. Underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> apply the basic principles of graphic arts <strong>and</strong> design<br />

techniques.<br />

4. Operate still <strong>and</strong> video cameras <strong>and</strong> edit videotape.<br />

5. Conduct interviews for newspaper stories <strong>and</strong> television programs.<br />

6. Write scripts for radio <strong>and</strong> television programs.<br />
