Program Design<br />

The program helps prepare students for entry into the State of Connecticut’s<br />

Department of Correction as a Correctional Trainee. The curriculum requires<br />

15 semester hours of college study, leading to a certificate. The Department of<br />

Administrative Services affords program graduates a waiver for the Correction<br />

Department’s written entrance examination. Upon successful completion, the<br />

Department of Correction will require c<strong>and</strong>idates to pass the remaining series<br />

of screening tests in order to be employed.<br />

Learning Outcomes<br />

The student who successfully completes this certificate will<br />

1. Explain the history <strong>and</strong> development of the system of corrections in<br />

American.<br />

2. Explain the structure of the Connecticut Department of Correction.<br />

3. Explain contemporary correctional issues, including prisoner’s rights,<br />

overcrowding, prison building, early release programs, the costs of<br />

corrections, privatizing, <strong>and</strong> the changing emphasis in correctional<br />

theory.<br />

4. Provide examples of ways in which social forces affect our everyday<br />

lives.<br />

5. Explain how deviance is interpreted as a product of society.<br />

6. Evaluate the various explanations of deviance.<br />

7. Present oral reports before a group.<br />

8. Demonstrate work skills relevant to the Connecticut Department of<br />

Correction.<br />

9. Process forms <strong>and</strong> other paperwork that would be h<strong>and</strong>led by a Correction<br />

Officer.<br />

10. Integrate the theoretical <strong>and</strong> practical applications of the Pre-Service<br />

Correction Certificate.<br />
